Job Description
KEY OBJECTIVE :
The AVP, Commercial Insurance (CI) Underwriting Manager is responsible for the profit, growth, distribution, and sales management of three customer groups.
The role is also responsible for facets of staff management, including hiring, retention, and performance management of several multiline underwriters.
The AVP, CI Manager will have direct oversight of the local team but will also need to work closely with the Toronto CI Management team, Industry Practice managers (TUM's) and Line of Business to successfully achieve growth goals and profitability goals.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES :
Profit and Growth
- Contribute to total premium, retention, profitability, and expense management goals for three Customer Groups in Toronto : CIS and Casualty.
- Execution of underwriting strategies for new and renewal business including catastrophe management and product.
- Oversight of underwriting excellence throughout the department to ensure adherence to strategy, authority and the achievement of satisfactory audit results.
- Oversight and management of underwriting referral process and coordination of accounts that fall outside of branch authority.
- Management of transactional excellence to ensure quality data, operational efficiency, and high service standards from all staff.
Sales and Distribution
- Assessment of the territory and identification of opportunities across CIS and Casualty.
- Development of sales and marketing strategies to ensure effective positioning of CI products and services throughout Ontario.
- Collaboration with the Toronto Branch Manager and other Business unit leaders to strategically and effectively leverage producer relationships.
- Primary responsibility for producer management, marketplace visibility, and effective travel coordination across your CI Team.
- Coordination and execution of customer focus through stewardship and direct customer engagement.
Staff Development and Leadership
- Accountability for the performance management process for all staff including timely performance reviews, compensation planning and implementation and performance management as needed.
- Consistent coaching, career counseling and skill development for all CI staff.
- Accountability for perpetuating a positive, collaborative and diverse work environment.
- Training, coaching, and mentoring, specifically related to technical, sales and marketing acumen.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of insurance industry experience.
- A strong working knowledge of middle market P&C products and strategies.
- Experience with managing field distribution (All broker tiers) is an asset.
- Strong technical / underwriting experience and background, CIS and Casualty knowledge is an asset.
- Exceptional leadership and people management skills.
- Marketing / sales skills and demonstrated ability to build strategic relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities with flexibility and adaptability.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and teamwork.
