Overview :
An Ironworker - Generalist is a skilled tradesperson who works with steel and other metal materials in a variety of construction, manufacturing, and heavy equipment environments. As an ironworker, your primary responsibilities include fabricating, assembling, installing, and maintaining steel structures such as truck trailers, cranes, bridges, and industrial buildings. You will work with a range of tools, welding techniques, and lifting equipment to ensure the safe and efficient construction of metal structures.
Key Responsibilities :
Fabricating Steel Components : Cut, shape, and assemble metal components for truck trailers, cranes, and other heavy-duty equipment using various tools and machinery.
Welding : Perform welding tasks using various techniques, including MIG, TIG, and Stick welding, to join steel components and parts. Ensure welds meet structural and safety standards.
Blueprint Interpretation : Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to fabricate and assemble metal components accurately.
Structural Steel Erection : Install steel beams, columns, and other structural elements for truck trailers and crane equipment.
Rigging and Lifting : Use hoists, cranes, and other lifting equipment to position large steel components into place. Ensure proper rigging techniques are followed to safely lift and move heavy objects.
Assembly of Crane Structures : Assemble and install components of crane systems, including hoists, booms, and counterweights, ensuring structural integrity and proper alignment.
Inspection of Materials : Examine materials and structural components to ensure they meet quality standards and specifications before installation.
Quality Assurance : Conduct quality control checks on fabricated metal parts, ensuring compliance with design specifications, safety standards, and industry regulations.
Troubleshooting : Identify defects or issues with welding, assembly, or materials and take corrective action to ensure high-quality results.
Repairs and Modifications : Perform repairs or modifications to existing truck trailers, cranes, and steel structures. This may involve cutting, welding, or replacing defective parts.
Preventive Maintenance : Participate in the regular maintenance of steel structures and equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation, addressing any issues that arise during routine inspections.
Adherence to Safety Protocols : Follow all safety regulations and procedures related to ironworking, welding, and the use of lifting equipment. Ensure that personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn at all times.
Regulatory Compliance : Ensure that all work is performed in compliance with industry standards and government regulations, including OSHA, local building codes, and quality control standards.
Worksite Safety : Maintain a safe and organized work environment by adhering to proper handling techniques for materials and equipment. Ensure work areas are clean and free from hazards.
Team Coordination : Work closely with other tradespeople, including welders, fabricators, and crane operators, to complete projects in a timely and efficient manner.
Communication : Effectively communicate with supervisors, project managers, and other team members regarding project timelines, material needs, and any potential delays or safety concerns.
Required Skills and Qualifications :
Education and Certification :
High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship or vocational training program in ironworking, welding, or a related field is preferred.
Certification in welding (e.g., AWS Certified Welder) and / or ironworking may be required, depending on the role and jurisdiction.
Safety Certifications : OSHA 10 / 30 certification or equivalent safety training preferred.
Experience :
Ironworking Experience : Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as an ironworker or steel fabricator, with hands-on experience in structural steel erection, welding, and assembly.
Truck Trailers and Cranes : Previous experience working with truck trailers, crane structures, or other heavy-duty industrial equipment is highly beneficial.
Welding Skills : Proficiency in various welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick) for joining steel components, with the ability to work with different types of metals and thicknesses.
Technical Skills :
Blueprint Reading : Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and welding symbols.
Rigging Knowledge : Experience with rigging, lifting, and moving heavy materials using cranes, hoists, and other equipment.
Cutting and Fabrication Tools : Experience with cutting tools (e.g., plasma cutters, torches) and other equipment used in steel fabrication.
Measurements and Layouts : Ability to take precise measurements and layouts for steel components and ensure accurate assembly and alignment.
Physical Abilities :
Physical Stamina : Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including lifting heavy materials, working at heights, and standing for long periods.
Manual Dexterity : Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment with precision and safety.
Climbing and Working at Heights : Comfortable working at heights, including scaffolding, cranes, and elevated work platforms.
Safety Awareness :
Comprehensive knowledge of safety procedures and regulations related to ironworking and welding. Ability to work safely with heavy equipment, welding tools, and at heights.
Ability to identify potential hazards and take proactive steps to ensure a safe work environment.
Communication and Teamwork :
Strong communication skills to work effectively with other tradespeople, supervisors, and project managers.
Ability to work well in a team environment and contribute to the successful completion of large, complex projects.
Working Conditions :
Environment : The role will involve working in industrial and construction settings, which may include exposure to noise, dust, welding fumes, and high temperatures. Ironworkers may also work at elevated heights, requiring the use of fall protection equipment.
Work Hours : Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, with the potential for overtime or weekend shifts depending on project deadlines. Some travel to different job sites may be required.
