If your values align with ours, consider joining our team as Legal Counsel.A TYPICAL WEEK : Working as part of the Legal Services team, and reporting to Vice-President, General Counsel & Chief Risk Officer, the role provides legal, policy and compliance services to Atlantic Central and LSM. The Legal Counsel also provides legal opinions and advice concerning a variety of issues , and provides government relations, compliance and governance support to the companies. Legal Counsel has many touchpoints with the Executive Leadership Team, and all departments, and is a valued business partner.Responsibilities·Drafts and reviews legal agreements, resolutions, by-laws and other documents on behalf of Atlantic Central, LSM and the Atlantic credit union system, to ensure their legal interests are appropriately represented and protected.·Develops and updates legal templates and precedents.·Conducts legal research and analysis and works with external legal counsel as necessary to provide legal opinions and advice on a variety of issues.·Monitors, reviews and analyzes legislation affecting company and system operations. Provides advice and drafts provisions relating to a variety of legislative matters. Updates the compliance management system.·Develops, recommends and manages the Legal Services Department's annual business goals and budget.·Supervises and coordinates the activities of the Legal Services summer student. ·Collects and organizes corporate and contractual information and manages the company-wide document and contract management systems.·Assists with research for developing and drafting corporate policies, procedures and practices, legal templates and precedents, in consultation with other departments.·In consultation with others, plans, develops, produces, and implements government relations activities to advance the interests and awareness of credit unions in Atlantic Canada.QualificationsAs the ideal candidate you will have successfully completed a law degree and be licensed and a member in good standing with the Law Society in one of the four Atlantic provinces and have 2-5 years relevant experience, or have an equivalent combination of training and experience.SkillsAdvice, Compliance, Management, LawArrayAbout Atlantic CentralAbout Atlantic CentralAtlantic Central is the regional trade association for more than 35 independent member credit unions across Atlantic Canada.
