Position Overview

Working as a member of the Health Information Services team, the incumbent is responsible for a variety of tasks related to health information, including patient / client registration, creating and maintaining patient / client health records, filing, record retention and destruction, and release of personal health information for ongoing care.

Experience

  • One (1) year experience in a Health Information Services Department required within the last two years.
  • One (1) year experience in a Medical Office required within the last two years.
  • Experience working with both electronic and paper health records preferred.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Education (Degree / Diploma / Certificate)

  • Complete high school education, Manitoba Standards, required.
  • Successful completion of a recognized Medical / Surgical Office Assistant diploma required.
  • Successful completion of a recognized Health Information Management program preferred.
  • Certification / Licensure / Registration

    Qualifications And Skills

  • Typing / keyboarding skills (minimum 30 wpm) required.
  • Medical terminology (75% pass) required.
  • Operational knowledge of computer terminals required.
  • Good command of English (oral and written) required.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Problem-solving and exercising judgment for decision-making within the scope of the job description.
  • Good understanding of the Mental Health Act and Personal Health Information Act.
  • Ensures security of patient / client health records and personal health information within the department.
  • Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged sitting.
  • Standing, walking, stairs, bending, reaching above head, lifting / moving patient records and boxes up to 30 lbs.
  • Deal with the public, patients / clients, coworkers, health care professionals, managers in a courteous, respectful and confidential manner.
  • Work environment consists of frequent interruptions.
  • Review documents electronically via a computer monitor screen for prolonged periods.
  • Work as part of a team as well as alone.
  • No natural light.
  • Adhere to all safety and health policies, regulations and safe work practices.
  • May be required to travel throughout the service area requiring a valid Manitoba driver’s license and use of a personal motor vehicle.
  • Security Check Requirement

    This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
