The Ministry of Forests (MOF) is the Province's land manager, responsible for stewardship of Provincial Crown land, cultural and natural resources.
MOF is one of six ministries jointly responsible for managing the natural resource sector and balancing economic opportunities with environmental stewardship.
The ministry's regional operations are structured in 23 districts within eight regions under the senior leadership of three geographically based Assistant Deputy Ministers and eight Regional Executive Directors.
Reporting to a Scaling Supervisor or other bargaining unit supervisor, the Coast Check Scaler contributes to ensuring Crown forests harvested are accurately scaled, assessed for stumpage, and revenue collected according to the Forest Act, Forest and Range Practices Act and provincial policy and guidelines.
The Coast Check Scaler conducts check scales of previously scaled timber, inspects timber scaling and transportation operations, initiates remedial actions to correct inadequacies identified through check scales and inspections, takes direct enforcement action where violations occur, assists in the performance of administrative duties, assists in maintaining scaling standards and performs other duties.

Job Requirements :
- Education, Experience and Certification :
- Graduation from Secondary School or equivalent combination of training and experience
- Valid Coast Scaler licence with required endorsements
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence
- Minimum of 3 years of Coastal scaling experience.
Preference may be given to applicants with :
- Valid dual scaling licenses (Coast and Interior) with required endorsements.
- 5 or more years of Coastal scaling experience.
Provisos and Willingness Statements
- Obtain an Interior Scaler licence with required endorsements.
- Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
- May be required to perform check scales and inspections outside of regular work hours.
- Conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Successful completion of Basic Law training within 6 months for appointment as a Forest Officer & Forest Official
- Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and / or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and / or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry.
