Heavy Duty Equipment Technician - Field Service
Field Service Heavy Duty Equipment Technician
Location: Petrolia, ON
Pay: $38$50/hour (based on experience)
Position: Field Service | Extensive Travel Required
Tired of turning wrenches in the same shop every day? Here's a chance to get out in the field, work on some different equipment and see parts of Canada most people never get to experience.
We're looking for a Field Service Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic based out of Petrolia to support rail maintenance and construction equipment across Ontario and beyond. This isn't your typical fleet shop position. You'll be working on a varied lineup of heavy equipment, rail maintenance machinery, trucks, trailers and support equipment, keeping crews moving and equipment working on active rail projects.
Travel is a big part of this role. Most assignments will be throughout Ontario, but you could occasionally find yourself travelling as far as New Brunswick. You'll head out to job sites with field crews, handle breakdowns, troubleshoot mechanical issues and keep equipment in working order. Some assignments can mean being away for up to two weeks at a time, followed by a few days back home.
When you're not travelling, you'll be based out of the Petrolia shop handling equipment maintenance, repairs, inspections and general servicing.
If you're a mechanic who enjoys working independently, doesn't mind putting some kilometres on the truck and would rather have a change of scenery than be tied to one shop, this could be a good fit.
What You'll Be Doing
- Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair a variety of heavy equipment, rail maintenance machinery, trucks, trailers and support equipment.
- Travel to active rail sites across Ontario and other parts of Canada to provide hands-on mechanical support.
- Handle field breakdowns, repairs and preventative maintenance to keep equipment operational and crews working.
- Perform equipment inspections and identify mechanical issues before they turn into bigger problems.
- Monitor equipment condition and flag anything that needs to be taken out of service.
- Work alongside operators and field crews, providing mechanical guidance on equipment operation, inspections and maintenance.
- Maintain service records, inspection reports and equipment logs.
What We're Looking For
- Hands-on experience working on heavy equipment, off-road machinery, trucks or similar equipment.
- Journeyperson certification is an asset, but not required. Experienced apprentices with a strong mechanical background are encouraged to apply.
- Background in heavy equipment, forestry, construction, industrial machinery or field service would be a good fit.
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. You're comfortable getting to the root of a mechanical problem and figuring out how to get equipment back up and running.
- Comfortable working independently and supporting field crews.
- Willing and able to travel extensively throughout Ontario and occasionally farther east, potentially as far as New Brunswick.
- Comfortable with extended trips away from home, varying job sites and occasional night shifts.
- Own tools required.
What's In It For You
- $38$50/hour, depending on experience, with flexibility for the right mechanic.
- Additional $2/hour field premium when working out in the field.
- Travel accommodations and meal allowance covered while on the road.
- RRSP contribution of $2.15 for every hour worked, fully paid by the company. No employee contribution required.
- Extended health, dental and vision coverage, with the company covering 50% of the premiums.
- Life and disability insurance.
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
- Non-union environment.
Schedule & Work Environment
This is a travel-heavy field service position. Expect approximately 10-hour days, typically 6 days on and 1 day off while on assignment. Most work is scheduled during the day, although some night shifts will be required depending on the project.
Travel assignments can keep you away for up to two weeks at a time, generally followed by a few days back home. When you're not out on the road, you'll support shop operations in Petrolia, handling maintenance, repairs and equipment preparation.
