Job Title: Product Reliability Engineer
Job Description
The Product Reliability Engineer leads reliability testing and analysis for complex, integrated products spanning hardware, firmware, software, and systems. This role develops reliability strategies, identifies potential failure modes, conducts comprehensive testing, and applies advanced statistical analysis to ensure products perform safely and reliably throughout their expected life, with a strong focus on innovative medical devices that directly impact patient care.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute comprehensive product reliability test plans across hardware, firmware, software, and integrated systems.
- Lead accelerated life testing, stress testing, endurance testing, environmental testing, and long-duration reliability testing to characterize product performance and durability.
- Perform detailed failure analysis and root cause investigations to identify, understand, and correct reliability issues.
- Apply reliability statistics and life-data analysis methods, including Weibull analysis, failure rate modeling, confidence target determination, and sample size calculations.
- Develop or lead automated test systems, instrumentation, and data acquisition solutions to support efficient and repeatable reliability testing.
- Use reliability block diagrams (RBD) and reliability prediction/allocation techniques to model system reliability and guide design decisions.
- Conduct reliability demonstration testing to validate that products meet defined reliability targets and requirements.
- Apply Arrhenius, Eyring, Coffin-Manson, and other acceleration models to predict life and understand failure mechanisms under varying stress conditions.
- Design and execute fault injection and automated regression testing to evaluate robustness and software reliability.
- Analyze and leverage CAPA and field reliability data to drive continuous improvement in product reliability and corrective actions.
- Contribute to cloud and software reliability activities, ensuring reliable performance of connected and software-enabled features.
- Partner closely with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Service teams to improve product reliability activities through design verification, design transfer, and sustaining engineering.
- Support design verification and design transfer processes to ensure reliability requirements are embedded and maintained throughout the product lifecycle.
- Communicate reliability findings, risks, and recommendations clearly to cross-functional stakeholders and help guide design and process improvements.
Essential Skills
- Strong experience in reliability engineering for complex products spanning hardware, firmware, software, and integrated systems.
- Hands-on expertise in life-data analysis and reliability statistics, including Weibull analysis, failure rate estimation, confidence target setting, and sample sizing.
- Proven ability to develop and execute product reliability test plans, including accelerated life, stress, endurance, environmental, and long-duration testing.
- Experience with reliability demonstration testing and use of reliability block diagrams (RBD) for system-level modeling.
- Proficiency in developing or leading automated test systems, instrumentation, and data acquisition solutions for reliability testing.
- Knowledge of reliability prediction and allocation methods to guide design and architecture decisions.
- Familiarity with Arrhenius, Eyring, Coffin-Manson, and other acceleration models used in reliability analysis.
- Experience performing failure analysis and root cause investigations for complex hardware and software systems.
- Experience in medical devices or similarly regulated, safety-critical products.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Service teams on design verification, design transfer, and sustaining engineering activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with test automation and data acquisition tools and frameworks.
- Knowledge of IEC standards and regulatory considerations relevant to medical devices and reliability engineering.
- Experience with software reliability and cloud reliability for connected products.
- Experience in automated regression testing and fault injection techniques for robustness validation.
- Familiarity with CAPA processes and analysis of field reliability data to drive corrective and preventive actions.
- Experience supporting design transfer and design verification with a focus on reliability requirements.
- Ability to work on multidisciplinary engineering teams and contribute across the product lifecycle.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a passion for tackling challenging reliability problems.
- Interest in working on innovative, complex medical devices that directly impact patient care and global health outcomes.
- Motivation to grow within an organization focused on innovation, technical ownership, and career development.
