Mahjong Instructor

The District of Oak Bay Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Contract Instructor to lead Mahjong Courses at Monterey Recreation Centre, a welcoming recreation facility serving adults of all ages. The successful candidate will instruct engaging, inclusive and enjoyable mahjong sessions, sharing their knowledge of the game and supporting participants in developing their skills, building confidence and connecting with others in a friendly social environment. We welcome applications from individuals with experience teaching either Western-style or Hong Kong-style mahjong.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plan and facilitate mahjong sessions appropriate to participants’ experience and skill levels.


• Teach and explain game rules, procedures, strategies and etiquette relevant to the style of mahjong offered.


• Create a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment that encourages social interaction and participation.


• Support participants in learning the game and improving their skills.


• Organize and oversee game materials and equipment during sessions.


• Communicate program needs and scheduling requirements with Monterey Recreation Centre staff.


• Ensure sessions are delivered in a safe, professional and enjoyable manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience playing Western or Hong Kong-style Mahjong.


• Previous experience teaching, instructing or facilitating group activities is an asset.


• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with adults of varying experience levels.


• Ability to foster an inclusive and respectful group environment.


• Provision of a current Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (Note: This is the contractors financial responsibility to obtain this).

Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday 6:30-8:00pm or Saturday 9:30-11:00am

60% to Contract Instructor

REPORTS TO

Monterey Recreation Centre Coordinator – Lesley Cobus

The successful applicant will be hired under a contract for service and will be responsible for submitting invoices and meeting their own applicable income tax, and other statutory obligations as applicable.
