Requirements:

  • Degree or diploma in information technology or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; a bachelors degree is preferred.
  • At least 7 years of progressive IT experience, including 3 or more years in a leadership or management position; 7 years of IT project management experience is required.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing a managed service provider (MSP) or other outsourced IT provider.
  • Experience applying a recognized cybersecurity framework, such as NIST CSF 2.0, CIS Controls, or ISO/IEC 27001, is preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of on-premises and cloud productivity platforms, identity and access management, device management, networking, and backup and recovery.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian privacy laws, including Albertas PIPA.
  • Experience managing business applications and software implementations; experience with an ERP implementation or another complex, cross-functional enterprise software project is an asset.
  • Experience in a dealership, distribution, rental, or field service environment is an asset.
  • Relevant certifications are an asset, such as CISSP, CISM, CISA, CompTIA Security+, ITIL 4, or Microsoft 365 or Azure certifications.
  • Self-directed and organized, with the judgment and confidence to serve as our first internal IT professional.
  • Clear communication skills, including the ability to explain technical matters in plain language; strong problem-solving, prioritization, and customer service skills.
  • Willingness to travel throughout Alberta and work occasional weekends.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers licence and reliable transportation.
  • Commitment to following health and safety policies.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a cybersecurity assessment using a recognized framework, report findings and remediation priorities, and oversee appropriate corrective actions.
  • Assess our technology environment—including infrastructure, applications, security controls, MSP services, and documentation—and develop and oversee a prioritized plan to address gaps.
  • Help leadership shape a three-year IT roadmap aligned with our business strategy.
  • Manage our day-to-day relationship with the MSP as its primary contact; monitor performance against the agreement, conduct service reviews, and manage escalations.
  • Ensure our network diagrams, configurations, asset records, operating documentation, and administrative access records are accurate, current, and controlled by the company.
  • Define scopes of work, service expectations, and accountability for internal staff and external providers, while reducing unnecessary vendor dependency through appropriate internal knowledge and access.
  • Oversee security controls, including multifactor authentication, endpoint and email security, and patching; maintain and test incident response, backup, and recovery procedures; and deliver employee security awareness training.
  • Provide hands-on assistance for escalated and on-site issues, including user account, access, and device administration, with support for mobile devices used by field technicians.
  • Support business applications in partnership with vendors and internal users.
  • Coordinate technology projects from implementation through user adoption.
  • Manage software licences, renewals, and hardware and software assets, and contribute to IT budgeting and forecasting.
  • Work with departmental leaders to identify and implement technology-enabled improvements to business processes and workflows.
  • Advise company leadership on technology strategy, risks, priorities, and investment, and collaborate with management, insurers, and other stakeholders on IT objectives and risk mitigation.

More:

We are Western Materials Handling (WestMat), an Alberta-based industrial equipment supplier that is Canadian-owned and operated. Founded in 1970, we became Canadas first independent Toyota forklift dealership and are Albertas only authorized dealer for Load Lifter rough-terrain forklifts, Heli forklifts, and Kalmar high-capacity lift trucks and container handlers. We work with customers on equipment, parts, service, rentals, and safety training, guided by our motto, Our Service Built Our Company. This newly created IT Manager position is our first internal IT role and provides hands-on leadership of our technology environment; routine help-desk and infrastructure support will continue to come from our MSP. The role is based in person at our Calgary office during regular business hours, with travel to our branches as needed. Work may involve extended computer use, occasional lifting of computer equipment, and periodic time in server rooms, shops, and warehouses. We offer a base salary, a flexible health spending account and RRSP with company match after a waiting period, professional development opportunities, disability and life insurance, and an employee assistance program.
