- Full-time
Help shape the future of software that keeps the lights on. At Survalent, we develop mission-critical software that helps electric utilities deliver reliable power. As Director, Software Development Effectiveness, you will play a key role in enhancing software quality, security, and development practices. You will lead our first security certification, drive continuous improvement, and establish scalable processes that support organizational growth while enabling teams to work efficiently and deliver high-quality solutions. If you are a collaborative leader passionate about engineering excellence and continuous improvement, we encourage you to apply.
Who You Are:
- Commercial software experience: Experience releasing and supporting software in production environments.
- Initiative and problem-solving: Ability to clarify requirements, ask questions, and document expectations.
- Ownership and accountability: Willingness to investigate technical issues and contribute to solutions.
- Adaptability: Ability to manage competing priorities and maintain progress on key deliverables.
- Coaching and development: Commitment to continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and constructive feedback.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Effective collaboration with Product Management, Development Analysts, Support, and Team Leads.
- Practical approach to technology: Interest in evaluating new tools, including AI, based on their effectiveness.
- Clear communication: Ability to explain technical concepts to leadership and engage in detailed discussions with development teams.
What You’ll be Doing:
- Secure, certified software: We are early in formalizing our secure development lifecycle against IEC 62443 and SOC 2 will follow. You will lead this work, including secure coding practices, penetration testing, incident management, and the documentation auditors expect. You will guide gap analysis and audit readiness through this certification.
- Ways of working and collaboration: You will shape how we plan, estimate, track, and report work across teams. You will define the KPIs we use to learn and improve, and you will give the business clearer visibility into engineering cost. You will strengthen design reviews and help development work closely with Product Management and Dev Analysts. As the team grows, you will help create clear growth paths so our developers know how to advance. You will also help teams use AI development tools safely.
- Quality: You will help teams catch problems earlier through faster feedback cycles, up-front quality practices, and strong automated testing. Our goal is a culture where developers own the quality of their work.
- Build: You will lead our small Build group. Together you will modernize our on-premise stack into a more integrated build, CI, and scanning pipeline.
- APIs.: You will own API standards, documentation, and the roadmap. Consistency across teams and products is the priority.
- Growth: You will help us decide how to scale. That may include new geographies, or trusted consultant partners.
What You’ll Need:
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field
- 10+ years of professional software development experience, including hands-on time as a developer or architect.
- 5+ years leading development teams, ideally including leading technical leads.
- Experience building and shipping commercial software for external customers.
- Comfort leading teams across a varied, modern stack. Our core SCADA, OMS, and DMS products use C++ and C#. Our web products use .NET and APIs, with React on the front end. Deep expertise in every area isn't required.
- A record of leading change and influencing across teams without owning every reporting line.
- Strong grounding in modern engineering practice, including CI/CD, automated testing, and secure development.
- Experience with a compliance framework such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, or IEC 62443, ISO 9001 or related certification experience.
- Experience with nearshore or distributed teams.
