Senior Accountant, Tax & Reporting - 100% Remote
- Full-time
- Remote
- 100% Remote
- Reports to CFO
- Ontario-based Preferred
- Alternative Medicine, Cannabis, Consumer Goods Industry
You get contacted every week. Another Senior Accountant role at another company doing the same thing. This one is different.
Our client is a fast-scaling consumer goods company with a diverse portfolio of regulated products operating across multiple global entities. The finance team is lean, remote, and built for people who want to make a real impact. They are growing quickly and show no signs of slowing down.
The CFO built this finance function from scratch, going from Analyst to CFO in four years. Now they need someone to grow alongside them. This is not a seat-filler role. It is a career-defining opportunity for someone who wants real ownership, direct C-suite access, and a front-row seat to what scaling a global consumer goods company actually looks like.
You will own the relationship with the external tax advisors across Canada and abroad, stay close enough to the books to know what every number means, and report straight to the CFO with no tax department above you and no one looking over your shoulder. If you are a firm Senior or Supervisor who wants to run something end to end, learn international tax on live files, and work fully remote from Ontario, this is the seat.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
- Base salary up to $110,000 CAD (flexible and can go higher for the right candidate)
- 10% annual bonus
- 3% company RRSP match (begins after 3 months)
- Medical benefits
- Paramedical coverage
- 3 weeks of vacation
- 100% remote, permanently
- Upward mobility: Controller, VP Finance, Director
WHAT YOU'LL DO
This role exists because the CFO has been running the company's tax engagements personally and has been pulled in too many directions. You take that file over completely: you manage and review the work of the external tax accountants across the Canadian and international entities, and you stay hands-on with the accounting team so you understand the business behind every number. You are not preparing returns. You are the person on the company's side asking the sharp questions so nothing reaches the CFO at the last minute. Roughly 60% tax and compliance, 40% accounting and reporting.
Tax & Compliance (approx. 60%)
- Own Our Tax Engagements: Act as the main contact for our external tax accountants across our Canadian and international entities. Set timelines, provide information early, and follow up so that nothing is left to the last minute.
- Review & Ask the Right Questions: Review corporate tax returns, filings and workpapers prepared by our advisors. Understand the positions taken, challenge where needed, and raise issues before deadlines rather than after.
- Filing & Disclosure Obligations: Build and maintain a group-wide compliance calendar covering income tax, foreign reporting (e.g., T106, T1134), withholding tax, and commodity tax (GST/HST, VAT). Work with advisors to confirm what is required in each jurisdiction and when.
- International Tax: Build our understanding of transfer pricing and intercompany loans through a tax lens, including interest rates, documentation, withholding and thin capitalization. Make sure our intercompany arrangements are documented, supported and consistent with how they are recorded.
- Withholding Tax & Treaties: Identify cross-border payments that may trigger withholding tax, confirm treaty eligibility with our advisors, and coordinate remittances and related filings.
- Year-End Tax Provision: Prepare or support the income tax provision (current and deferred tax under IAS 12) in coordination with our external advisors and auditors.
- Be Proactive, Not Reactive: Spot business changes (new entities, new markets, new intercompany agreements) that have tax consequences, bring the right questions to our advisors, and explain the answers to the team in plain language.
Accounting & Reporting (approx. 40%)
- Month-End & Year-End Close: Prepare journal entries, accruals, revaluations and intercompany reconciliations. Compile supporting schedules for audit and tax (e.g., accruals, prepaids, capital assets).
- Intercompany Accounting: Reconcile intercompany balances and loans, and make sure the accounting lines up with our tax and transfer pricing positions.
- Reporting & Data: Pull reports and data from our ERP on your own to support tax filings, audits and requests from the CFO.
- Financial Statements & Audit: Help prepare IFRS financial statements and support the year-end audit.
- Process Improvement: Build the checklists, calendars and workflows that move our tax and close processes from reactive to proactive.
CPA,Tax,Public Accounting
You came up through a National OR Small - Mid size public accounting firm. You are used to doing it all, from compilations and reviews to tax returns and full-cycle accounting, not just one narrow slice. You do not need hand-holding. You see something off and you say something. You are CPA designated or close to it, and you can hold your own on technical questions without always escalating.
You thrive in environments that are fast, a little messy, and full of opportunity. Ambiguity does not freeze you. It motivates you.
MUST-HAVES
- CPA designation and a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
- 3 to 7 years in public accounting at a small or mid-sized firm, as a Senior or Supervisor, where you saw a bit of everything
- Hands-on T2 preparation or review across a mix of clients, with a strong grasp of the schedules and how they connect
- Compilation or review engagement experience
- Comfortable in month-end close and in pulling your own reports, with strong Excel skills and ERP experience (Sage 300 or Microsoft Business Central preferred)
- IFRS experience is an asset; ASPE with a willingness to learn IFRS is fine
- Real curiosity about international tax (transfer pricing, withholding tax, foreign reporting). No prior experience required, but be ready to explain how you teach yourself new material
- A generalist's range: you want both tax and accounting, and you are willing to do the detailed work yourself, even at a senior level
- Confident with external advisors: you ask clear, specific questions, explain tax in plain language, and follow up without being reminded
- Self-directed and comfortable working fully remote, motivated by ownership and growth
** Not a fit if you want to prepare returns, want only tax or only accounting, or need close direction day to day.
