About the Opportunity

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking two experienced Senior Construction Contract Specialists to support major capital infrastructure projects for one of British Columbia's largest utility providers.

This opportunity is ideal for professionals with strong backgrounds in construction contract administration, commercial management, claims, change management, or quantity surveying who enjoy navigating complex contractual issues and delivering practical, evidence-based solutions.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary Major Projects team, you will oversee the commercial administration of complex construction contracts, assess contractor submissions and claims, manage contractual changes, and provide strategic recommendations to support project delivery.

This is a hands-on role requiring strong analytical skills, sound commercial judgment, and the ability to interpret complex contracts while working collaboratively with project management, construction, engineering, project controls, procurement, finance, and legal teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer complex construction contracts throughout project execution, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, established procedures, and delegated authorities.

  • Interpret contract terms and conditions, providing practical contractual and commercial guidance to project teams.

  • Prepare and review contractual correspondence, formal notices, change documentation, contractor submissions, and commercial communications.

  • Assess contractor claims, change requests, and commercial submissions, including contractual entitlement, causation, schedule impacts, cost implications, and supporting evidence.

  • Investigate complex contractual issues by reviewing project documentation, construction records, schedules, RFIs, meeting minutes, and cost information.

  • Identify inconsistencies, unsupported assumptions, and gaps in contractor submissions, determining additional documentation or substantiation requirements.

  • Develop clear, evidence-based contractual assessments and recommendations for project leadership and senior management.

  • Administer contract changes and support the evaluation, negotiation, and implementation of change orders, directives, and commercial settlements.

  • Collaborate with Project Controls to evaluate delays, extensions of time, disruption, acceleration, and prolongation claims.

  • Review contractor pricing, claimed costs, and supporting financial documentation to assess contractual entitlement and commercial reasonableness.

  • Coordinate technical input from engineering, construction, project controls, finance, procurement, and legal teams.

  • Monitor contractual obligations, notice requirements, key dates, and emerging commercial risks to protect organizational interests.

  • Develop negotiation strategies and participate in discussions with contractors regarding claims, changes, and contractual disputes.

  • Support dispute resolution, including escalation and formal proceedings when necessary.

  • Maintain comprehensive contract records supporting negotiations, audits, management decisions, and dispute resolution.

  • Identify opportunities to improve contract management practices, commercial processes, and overall project delivery.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in construction contract administration, commercial management, claims, quantity surveying, project controls, or a related major-project discipline.

  • Demonstrated experience administering complex construction contracts and resolving contractual and commercial issues during project execution.

  • Strong ability to interpret construction contracts and apply contractual provisions to real-world project circumstances.

  • Experience preparing or reviewing construction changes, claims, contractual notices, commercial correspondence, and contractor submissions.

  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to assess conflicting project information and develop well-supported commercial recommendations.

  • Understanding of construction cost structures, contractor pricing, and financial impacts associated with changes and claims.

  • Working knowledge of construction scheduling and critical-path methodology (CPM), including schedule impacts related to delays and contractual changes.

  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, concise, and defensible contractual assessments and correspondence.

  • Strong negotiation, problem-solving, stakeholder management, and commercial judgment.

  • Ability to independently manage complex contractual matters while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple commercial issues across major projects.

  • Degree, diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience in Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Business, Commerce, Law, Finance, Project Management, or a related discipline.

Nice to Have

  • Experience supporting major infrastructure, utilities, hydroelectric, heavy civil, transportation, industrial, or other complex capital projects.

  • Experience managing large-scale construction contracts and high-value changes or claims.

  • Background in contractor-side commercial management, including preparing and negotiating claims, notices, and change submissions.

  • Experience with alternative or collaborative project delivery models.

  • Knowledge of construction delay analysis, disruption, acceleration, and prolongation matters.

  • Experience in quantity surveying, detailed cost analysis, or project controls.

  • Familiarity with Primavera P6 or other critical-path scheduling software.

  • Experience supporting construction dispute resolution and negotiating significant commercial settlements.

  • Experience collaborating with internal or external legal counsel.

  • Professional designations or specialized education in construction contracts, quantity surveying, project controls, scheduling, claims, or dispute resolution.

Candidates are not expected to have experience in every area listed above.
