Job description

Summary

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer – Community Development on behalf of our client, an established multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Senior Civil Engineer will join a growing Community Development team, supporting a diverse portfolio of land and site development projects across Alberta. Projects include single-family residential communities, multi-family developments, commercial and industrial sites, institutional facilities, and neighbourhood parks.

This role combines hands-on civil design with project delivery, client coordination, municipal approvals, construction administration, and mentorship. The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of Alberta's land development process and experience delivering projects from planning and design through approvals, tendering, and construction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation of planning, design, tender, and construction administration deliverables for land and community development projects.

  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, drawings, technical reports, specifications, and cost estimates.

  • Complete and coordinate site servicing, grading, stormwater management, roadway geometrics, and municipal infrastructure design.

  • Support residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, multi-family, and park development projects.

  • Manage the day-to-day delivery of small and mid-sized projects, including scope, schedule, budget, resources, and quality control.

  • Coordinate development applications, permits, and approvals with municipalities, utility providers, regulators, and other external stakeholders.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients, contractors, municipal reviewers, and project partners.

  • Support construction administration, including field reviews, contractor inquiries, contract administration, and review of construction progress and quality.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, EITs, and technologists.

  • Prepare proposals, fee estimates, and client presentations and support business development activities.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Community Planning, Landscape Architecture, Transportation, Municipal, and Buildings.

  • Use Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Excel, and other engineering tools to support project design and delivery.

  • Identify opportunities to use technology and innovative approaches to improve project delivery and technical work.

Qualifications

Must-Haves

  • B.Sc. or B.Eng. in Civil Engineering; a Civil Engineering Technology diploma may also be considered.

  • Registered or eligible for registration with APEGA as a P.Eng. or E.I.T., or ASET as a P.Tech. or C.E.T.

  • Approximately 7–10 years of progressive experience working on land development or municipal infrastructure projects.

  • Strong experience with land development and community development projects.

  • Working knowledge of Alberta's land development and municipal approval processes.

  • Experience with site servicing and grading design.

  • Experience preparing or coordinating stormwater management, roadway, and municipal servicing designs.

  • Experience supporting projects through planning, design, approvals, tendering, and construction.

  • Experience with construction administration and coordination with contractors and municipal stakeholders.

  • Ability to manage project scope, schedule, budget, resources, and quality requirements.

  • Working knowledge of Civil 3D, AutoCAD, and Excel.

  • Strong communication and client relationship skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and planning teams.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Strong experience delivering Alberta-based land development projects.

  • Experience with residential subdivision and community development projects.

  • Experience across commercial, industrial, institutional, multi-family, or park developments.

  • Experience managing small to mid-sized land development projects.

  • Experience preparing proposals, fee estimates, and supporting business development.

  • Experience mentoring junior engineers, EITs, or technologists.

  • Established relationships with Alberta municipalities, developers, contractors, or other land development stakeholders.

  • Experience using technology, automation, or innovative engineering tools to improve design and project delivery.
