Firmware Engineer

Salary: $80,000 - 98,000 per year

Requirements:

• Bachelors degree required.
• Eight years of firmware experience required; the role description is calibrated for approximately 3–8 years writing production firmware in C on resource-constrained microcontrollers.
• Experience developing bare-metal and RTOS firmware in C for 32-bit microcontrollers and real hardware, including radio links, switching electronics, battery-operated devices, and sensors.
• Hands-on ownership of firmware features or device areas, including drivers, peripheral bring-up, testing, and releases.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation preferred.
• Must be able to work in person in south Edmonton; remote or hybrid work is not available.
• This role is not suited to candidates whose embedded experience is primarily Raspberry Pi, Linux userspace, or Python on a single-board computer, or who are transitioning from application, web, or backend development without hands-on bare-metal firmware experience.

Responsibilities:

• Own assigned firmware features or device areas from requirements through implementation, testing, release, maintenance, and field support.
• Write, test, and maintain embedded firmware in C, including peripheral drivers, hardware abstraction layers, and communications interfaces.
• Support board bring-up and validation with electrical engineers, and debug hardware and firmware interactions using appropriate tools.
• Develop unit and integration tests, maintain automated test coverage, and contribute to continuous integration and build/test workflows.
• Contribute to firmware releases, including versioning, over-the-air update systems, and release qualification.
• Create and maintain Python support tools and build infrastructure, as well as technical documentation for interfaces, integration, updates, and troubleshooting.
• Evaluate technical trade-offs, recommend implementation approaches, participate in design and architecture reviews, identify risks and dependencies, estimate work, and contribute to project planning.
• Escalate decisions with broader or cross-product implications to senior technical staff, share knowledge, and improve team practices and tools.
• Use the AI coding tools we provide, applying engineering judgment to validate, test, and take ownership of generated output.
• Participate in code reviews and collaborate with electrical, firmware, and software engineers to define and refine hardware/software interfaces.
• Work with QA, manufacturing/test, operations/support, and product management to plan releases, diagnose issues, and support product launches.
• Help resolve field and customer-reported issues through root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Assist manufacturing with production bring-up, test firmware, and troubleshooting documentation.
