Curriculum Developer, Indigenous Language Fluency Diploma Development

Position Summary

The Curriculum Developer, Indigenous Language Fluency Diploma, will support the development of a new Indigenous Language Fluency Diploma through a collaborative partnership between North Island College, We Wai Kai First Nation, Indigenous language speakers, Elders, Knowledge Holders, educators, and community partners. Grounded in local Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and learning, the incumbent will work collaboratively to develop a diploma that reflects community priorities for language revitalization, cultural continuity, and self-determination.

The Curriculum Developer will lead the development of program learning outcomes, course learning outcomes, authorized course descriptions, curriculum frameworks, learning resources, and supporting documentation required for curriculum approval. The diploma will be designed as a flexible framework that can support the learning, revitalization, and transmission of multiple Indigenous languages, including but not limited toBak̓ʷəmk̓ala, nuučaan̓uł, and ayʔaǰuθɛm, while respecting the unique linguistic and cultural contexts of each community. The framework will support multiple delivery modalities, including online, blended, and community-based learning environments.

Building on North Island College’s Indigenous Language Fluency Certificate, the incumbent will support the development of a diploma pathway that strengthens advanced language learning and community capacity for language revitalization. The role also includes reviewing the existing certificate to identify opportunities for alignment and pathway development between the two credentials. Working with community and college partners, the Curriculum Developer will contribute to curriculum development, articulation, governance, and program approval processes while ensuring community priorities remain at the centre of the work. Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead and support the development of the Indigenous Language Fluency Diploma.
• Collaborate with Indigenous language speakers, Elders, Knowledge Holders, community representatives, faculty, and educational partners to direct diploma and curriculum development.
• Establish and facilitate a Program Advisory Council representing Bak̓ʷəmk̓ala, nuučaan̓uł, and ayʔaǰuθɛm language communities to guide diploma development and provide community-informed feedback.
• Facilitate community engagement, consultation, and partnership activities to ensure curriculum development reflects community priorities and language revitalization goals.
• Develop program learning outcomes, program frameworks, course learning outcomes, authorized course descriptions, learning resources, and related curriculum documentation.
• Develop curriculum frameworks that support adaptation across multiple language contexts and delivery modalities while respecting distinct linguistic, cultural, and community priorities.
• Review the existing Indigenous Language Fluency Certificate and identify opportunities for alignment, enhancement, and laddering pathways.
• Prepare necessary documentation required for governance, curriculum approval, and quality assurance processes.
• Prepare reports, recommendations, presentations, and project updates.
• Lead project planning, timelines, milestones, and deliverables.

Required Education & Experience

• Master’s Degree in Indigenous Education, Indigenous Language Revitalization, Indigenous Language Studies, Curriculum Studies, Linguistics, or a related field is preferred.
• Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of experience in curriculum development, program development, instructional design, or related post-secondary curriculum work is an asset.
• Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of experience in Indigenous language learning, teaching, revitalization, reclamation, and community-based language programming.
• Experience with Liq’wala language revitalization, language education, curriculum development, or community-based language programming is highly desirable given the partnership with We Wai Kai First Nation.
• Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with Indigenous communities, organizations, Elders, Knowledge Holders, and language speakers.
• Lived experience with Indigenous language learning, teaching, or revitalization within community is highly valued.
• Proficiency in an Indigenous language and the ability to work collaboratively with fluent speakers is strongly preferred.
• Experience supporting language immersion, mentorship, master-apprentice, or intergenerational language transmission initiatives is a strong asset.
• Preference may be given to qualified Indigenous candidates who bring lived experience, language knowledge, and established relationships within local Indigenous communities.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities

• Experience developing curriculum, programs, courses, learning outcomes, and educational resources for post-secondary, adult, and community-based learning environments, with demonstrated knowledge of curriculum development, governance, and approval processes
• Strong knowledge of curriculum design, curriculum mapping, credential development, and assessment practices.
• Knowledge of Indigenous language revitalization, reclamation, and community-based language learning approaches.
• Strong understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing, being, learning, and teaching and their application to curriculum development.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with Indigenous communities, Elders, Knowledge Holders, language speakers, and educational partners.
• Experience working within community-based, land-based, or culturally grounded learning environments.
• Understanding of diverse Indigenous language contexts and the ability to develop adaptable curriculum frameworks while respecting linguistic and cultural distinctions.
• Experience reviewing, renewing, or enhancing curriculum, programs, or credentials in a post-secondary setting.
• Strong project management, facilitation, consultation, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
• Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Ability to approach curriculum development from a strengths-based, decolonizing, and community-centered perspective.
• Proficiency in an Indigenous language, particularly Bak̓ʷəmk̓ala, or experience supporting Indigenous language learning and curriculum development is a strong asset.
