Security Engineer – Physical Security Systems

Location: Burnaby, BC
Duration: 12-Month Contract
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – regular office attendance required; remote candidates will not be considered

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking an experienced Security Engineer to support physical security system design for one of British Columbia’s largest utility providers. This position combines electrical and/or Protection & Control (P&C) design experience with the design, testing, and commissioning of physical security systems.

The successful candidate will be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with a valid EGBC Permit to Practice and bring strong experience with equipment layouts, wiring and schematics, equipment sizing, cable selection, and engineering design documentation.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop detailed designs for physical security systems, including equipment selection, layouts, wiring, and schematics.
• Perform electrical and/or Protection & Control design for utility infrastructure.
• Prepare equipment layout designs and detailed wiring and schematic drawings.
• Perform equipment sizing and select appropriate cable types and sizes.
• Work closely with drafters, designers, and Professionals of Record (PoR) to develop engineering deliverables.
• Prepare engineering documentation, calculations, specifications, estimates, design packages, and other technical deliverables.
• Develop Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) for security systems.
• Perform onsite testing and commissioning.
• Provide technical support during construction, installation, and field activities.
• Conduct field reviews as required.
• Prepare signed and sealed engineering deliverables as required.
• Support the development and updating of engineering and physical security standards.
• Provide technical guidance and direction to junior engineers.
• Coordinate design activities including scope, schedule, cost, and resources.
• Resolve technical design and field engineering issues using sound engineering judgment.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years of relevant engineering experience or equivalent.
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
• Valid EGBC Permit to Practice.
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
• Electrical engineering, Protection & Control, or combined Electrical/P&C design experience.
• Experience with equipment layout design.
• Experience with wiring and schematic design.
• Experience with equipment sizing and cable type/size selection.
• Experience working collaboratively with drafters, designers, and Professionals of Record.
• Ability to prepare and review professional engineering deliverables.
• Strong technical, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Familiarity with CAD systems, engineering drawings, and standard design/analysis software.
• Ability to attend the office as required; this position is not available on a fully remote basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with physical security system design within a utility or similarly complex infrastructure environment.
• Experience developing Inspection and Test Plans.
• Field testing and commissioning experience.
• Familiarity with utility engineering and drafting standards.
• Experience supporting engineering standard development and updates.
• Previous experience working in electrical utility environments.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced electrical or P&C engineer who can apply their design background to physical security systems in a complex utility environment. They will be comfortable owning technical design activities, coordinating with engineering and drafting teams, supporting field testing and commissioning, and providing professional engineering oversight from design through implementation.
