Job Description

Québec City or Montréal | Leadership Position | Financial Reporting, Management and Performance

Vortex Strategy & Recruitment is actively seeking a Director, Financial Reporting for its client, an established and growing Québec-based industry leader whose head office and primary accounting operations are located in Québec City, with a corporate presence in Boucherville as well.

Reporting directly to the Vice President, Finance and Administration, the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the quality, reliability and relevance of the organization’s financial information. Acting as a true right hand to the VP on financial reporting matters, this individual will oversee a sizeable accounting team and ensure the rigor of month-end processes, the continuous improvement of financial deliverables and the strength of the controls supporting them. The role also includes a significant financial planning, analysis and decision-support component.

The position will be primarily office-based initially and requires a minimum of three days per week at the Québec City office. Candidates based in Montréal will be considered provided they are willing to travel regularly to Québec City; however, preference will be given to candidates already based in the Québec City area.

Your Role and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the entire financial reporting process and ensure the quality, reliability, compliance and timely delivery of financial information;

  • Lead complex month-end and year-end closing processes by coordinating the various stakeholders, ensuring the quality of analyses, reconciliations and journal entries, and overseeing the timely resolution of discrepancies and issues;

  • Enhance the quality, accuracy and relevance of financial deliverables to provide management with clear, consistent and actionable information to support decision-making;

  • Review and improve accounting processes, internal controls and work methods to strengthen the reliability of financial information, reduce risks and support more efficient execution;

  • Lead, engage, develop and coach a team of approximately 15 employees primarily based in Québec City, while clarifying responsibilities and ensuring individual accountability throughout the financial reporting process;

  • Ensure rigorous oversight of administrative and contractual requirements specific to construction activities, including releases, notices of contract and other matters requiring precise coordination with the relevant stakeholders;

  • Prepare and analyze budgets, forecasts, financial projections, performance indicators and management analyses;

  • Present financial results, variances, issues, analyses and recommendations to the VP and senior management to support business decisions;

  • Work closely with operations and other functions across the organization to improve the quality of information provided to Finance and enhance the understanding of financial results;

  • Act as a key partner to the digital transformation team by defining the needs of the Finance function, assessing the impact on financial information and ensuring that implemented solutions meet the team’s requirements;

  • Contribute to the evolution of accounting systems, management tools and the financial data environment, without being the primary owner of transformation projects.

Requirements

  • More than 8 years of relevant experience in accounting, financial control or finance, ideally 10 years or more;

  • CPA designation required, except for an exceptionally experienced accounting professional who can demonstrate equivalent technical and managerial expertise;

  • Proven experience in team management, coaching and employee engagement;

  • Strong command of the accounting cycle, financial control, financial analysis and complex month-end and year-end closing processes;

  • Hands-on experience improving accounting processes, internal controls and financial deliverables;

  • Strong knowledge of accounting systems and the ability to work effectively in complex technology environments;

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel;

  • Ability to prepare financial projections and present complex information to senior management;

  • Experience in an industrial, manufacturing or construction environment is considered a significant asset;

  • Additional knowledge of corporate finance is considered an asset.

The Ideal Profile

  • A rigorous, engaging, structured and results-oriented leader with a strong focus on quality;

  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to maintain a high standard of quality in an environment involving multiple deadlines, stakeholders and follow-up requirements;

  • A collaborative leadership style and the ability to hold team members accountable, clarify expectations and ensure that everyone contributes effectively to the financial reporting process;

  • A strong interest in financial statements, the quality of financial information and developing an in-depth understanding of financial results;

  • The ability to take a step back and assess processes and controls, identify pain points and implement practical improvements that enhance the quality and efficiency of financial deliverables;

  • Excellent business judgment, strong administrative rigor and the ability to combine technical depth, people management and a broad organizational perspective;

  • The ability to collaborate effectively with operations, senior management and teams responsible for systems and transformation.

The Benefits

  • A strategic role reporting directly to senior management, with the opportunity to become a true right hand to the VP on financial reporting matters;

  • The opportunity to have a tangible impact on the quality of financial information and the evolution of the Finance function within a Québec-based industry leader;

  • A sizeable accounting team to lead, develop and empower;

  • A complex financial environment offering the opportunity to improve month-end processes, controls and the quality of financial deliverables;

  • A growing organization offering opportunities for professional advancement;

  • A role that will continue to evolve alongside the organization’s growth and priorities.
