Job Title: Lab Engineer (Intermediate)

Job Description

As an intermediate Lab Engineer, you will work closely with development and test teams to ensure that lab infrastructure, hardware, and automation systems reliably support continuous testing and integration. You will set up, maintain, and troubleshoot a wide range of lab equipment and automation nodes, contribute to hardware bring-up and validation, and help sustain a fully automated pipeline that enables hundreds of developers to deliver cutting-edge automotive infotainment and connectivity technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with development and test teams to understand lab, hardware, and automation requirements and translate them into robust lab setups.
  • Ensure sufficient lab hardware, automation nodes, and test benches are available and properly configured to support the needs of the development community.
  • Set up, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot lab equipment, including ECUs, development boards, power supplies, network equipment, displays, cabling, and related peripherals.
  • Maintain lab equipment to ensure high availability, reliability, and optimal operational performance for on-target and off-target testing.
  • Support hardware bring-up, validation, and recovery of failed or unresponsive test nodes to minimize downtime.
  • Analyze lab metrics, identify trends, and perform root-cause analysis of failures, validating fixes to improve stability and performance.
  • Monitor messaging and collaboration platforms to provide timely technical support to development and test teams.
  • Document lab configurations, troubleshooting procedures, known issues, and recovery steps to build and maintain clear operational knowledge.
  • Develop, debug, and maintain Python-based tools and scripts used in test and lab environments, applying sound software engineering practices.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a fully automated pipeline that supports continuous validation by cross-functional development teams.
  • Troubleshoot lab connectivity issues involving Ethernet, USB, serial, WiFi, and CAN, ensuring reliable communication between devices and automation nodes.
  • Use batch and shell scripting in Windows and Linux environments to automate routine tasks and streamline lab operations.
  • Apply electronics knowledge to connect circuits, work with devices such as Arduino, and debug basic electronic issues in the lab.
  • Apply an analytical and methodical approach to diagnose complex problems and implement effective solutions in real time.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Experience working with hardware, embedded systems, or test benches, including basic power, cabling, connectivity, and device troubleshooting.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of hands-on professional experience developing real-time industry applications using Python.
  • Proven experience with automated testing environments and frameworks, such as PyTest.
  • Extensive proficiency in Python and PyTest, including the ability to develop and debug code during live programming exercises.
  • Ability to produce clean, well-structured, and well-documented code while applying sound software engineering practices.
  • Strong debugging skills and solid understanding of classes and object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts.
  • Industrial IP networking knowledge with real-time experience troubleshooting lab connectivity issues involving Ethernet, USB, serial, WiFi, or CAN.
  • General and terminal knowledge of both Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Experience with batch scripting in Windows and shell scripting in Linux environments.
  • Ability to quickly comprehend and work with real-time system requirements.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to creatively and effectively identify root causes of problems.
  • Practical electronics knowledge, including connecting circuits, working with Arduino, and debugging basic electronic components.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with CI/CD systems, such as Jenkins.
  • Experience with Ansible for automation and configuration management.
  • Experience with Groovy or Java development.
  • Experience with automotive ECUs and infotainment systems.
  • Familiarity with test and lab environments involving hardware, embedded systems, and test benches.
  • Knowledge of Python-based test frameworks and tooling in an automated pipeline context.

Work Environment

This role is based on-site daily at an R&D center in Waterloo, working within a Test Automation and Tools Development team focused on automotive infotainment and connectivity technologies. You will operate in a highly technical lab environment that includes automation nodes, test benches, ECUs, development boards, power supplies, network equipment, displays, and a variety of cabling and peripherals. The team maintains a large fleet of lab hardware to enable continuous, around-the-clock validation for cross-functional development groups. You will use Windows and Linux systems, networking technologies such as Ethernet, USB, serial, WiFi, and CAN, and participate in an engineering-focused culture that values collaboration, reliability, and innovative problem solving in support of a fully automated test pipeline.
