OVERVIEW
Vertex is currently accepting applications for a Junior Environmental Scientist to join our team in the Greater Toronto Area.
The ideal candidates will have experience in plant, wetland and wildlife identification, soil classification, detailed site assessments (DSAs) and / or weed spraying.
The successful candidates will also possess a keen eye for detail, be critical thinkers, and will enjoy working in the field for extended periods of time.
Reporting to an Environmental Project Manager, the individual must be willing to travel and take additional responsibilities as the position / project evolves.
Previous environmental experience is considered an asset.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma or higher post-secondary education in Reclamation, Soil Science, Environmental Science, Biological Science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry or other applicable fields
- Understanding of remote area navigation; experience using maps, compass, GPS and aerial photos for navigation in the field is advantageous
- Demonstrated ability to drive trucks and / or a variety of off-road vehicles in rough terrain
- Working knowledge of and ability to interpret environmental regulations, guidelines and standards
- Ability to work in a team and independently
- Proficient in Microsoft Office with advanced knowledge of Word and Excel
- Demonstrated communication and decision-making skills
- Willingness to gain field experience in remote locations
- Willingness to work in the field for extended periods of time
- Willingness to travel within the Greater Toronto area as required
- Ability to problem solve
- Strong interpersonal skills
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities will vary depending on the candidate’s strengths and areas of interest, the responsibilities included below are inclusive of a range of skill sets that Vertex will require to execute programs and projects.
- Field work is a requirement, approximately 90% or more of time will be allocated to the field
- Supporting Vertex field leads conducting Phase 1 and 2 ESA’s
- Plant and invasive species identification
- Wildlife identification
- Wetland identification and delineation
- Soil classification
- Weed spraying (possession of an applicators license is an asset)
- Detailed Site Assessments (previous experience is an asset)
- Monitor soil conservation and reclamation activities
- Data management (data tables, photographs, inputting field data sheets)
- Other fieldwork as required by Environmental Project Manager
LOCATION
This position will be based out of Ontario - within 75km of the Greater Toronto Area is preferred. This position will be both home and field based.
