Your Opportunity:

Working under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Director, Technology Services will have overall responsibility for developing and leading the technology strategy planning efforts for the Information Technology (IT) department and ensuring that IT programs and initiatives align to Faculty of Information objectives and strategies. The incumbent leads the IT team; manages IT annual capital budgets; defines metrics based on overall Faculty objectives, and ensures the integrity, reliability, security, and performance of information systems.

The Director plans, implements, and sustains a comprehensive information and technology environment. The Director provides creative leadership and strategic direction, design, development, and management in the area of technology services, including instructional design; help desk; information technology; web, classroom media, and audiovisual services for students, staff, faculty, and visitors; research technology support; AI-enabled services; and emerging technology initiatives. The incumbent is responsible for the development and implementation of short-term and long-term technology strategies across all the technology services in the portfolio, management of Faculty administrative information systems and of the Faculty’s use of University enterprise administrative information systems, and full management of related staff and resources.

The incumbent directs the development and execution of an information security plan that protects the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the Faculty’s data in collaboration with the Faculty leadership team and institutional partners; establishes IT departmental goals, objectives, and operating procedures, and IT standards and technologies to meet a changing technological landscape. The Director advises on the appropriate response to external factors affecting all technology services within the Faculty, and is the Faculty’s administrative computing representative for University-wide committees and forums.

The Director works closely with central offices such as Information Technology Services, Information Security, Privacy, and other institutional partners to leverage enterprise technology platforms and infrastructure while ensuring Faculty-specific technology needs are met. The Director develops sustainable service models that support the Faculty's strategic priorities and long-term financial sustainability, balancing enterprise services provided by the University with specialized Faculty-level services required to support research, experimentation, innovation, and academic priorities.

The Director fully understands and appreciates the Faculty’s academic and research programs, the participation of students in the Faculty’s programs, as well as the administration of the Faculty’s business functions. The Director interfaces with visitors and the public, and consults with faculty, senior management, and other individuals regularly to understand the Faculty’s needs and the available University resources.

The Director values, embodies, promotes, and instills in their team a service-oriented approach, sets and implements service standards and key performance indicators with a focus on continual improvement and innovation, to position the Faculty to be able to leverage existing IT services and seize emerging opportunities. The incumbent is a leader that has demonstrated success throughout their career; can build teams and solutions effectively; has the ability to work with faculty and staff to develop, and communicate the status of technology plans and initiatives; and has the ability to promote and deliver quality service to faculty, staff, and students.

Essential Qualifications:

Education:

University degree in computer science, or the equivalent acceptable combination of education and experience; master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

Seven or more years of progressive responsibility working in the field of information systems and technology, with demonstrated technical knowledge/skills in a wide range of client/server environments, internet/intranet technologies, and data and internet security, preferably in a University environment. Experience in policy formulation, project management, network systems, web-enabled database systems, management of daily operations, end user support, disaster recovery, and staff IT training. Experience identifying and leveraging available technologies and resources for varied stakeholder needs. Experience achieving operational efficiencies and excellence through integrated planning. Knowledge of academic environment and policies and procedures related to IT management, privacy legislation, and confidentiality. Minimum of five years of management experience in a unionized environment.

Skills:

Sound knowledge of a variety of software and hardware including AMS, standard operating systems, Microsoft products, SMS, IIS servers. Must understand network integration and software development lifecycle. Demonstrated breadth of technical knowledge sufficient to provide leadership and sound judgment across enterprise infrastructure, cloud and digital platforms, cybersecurity, research technology, applications and emerging technologies. Thorough understanding of data exchange and database management in a multi-database environment is required. Demonstrated leadership and strategic planning skills; effective oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal and customer service skills; excellent organizational and diagnostic/analytical skills; must be a strategic thinker; and able to lead a technical team with strong supervisory skills.

Ability to work well as a member of a team; ability to work well under pressure and resolve problems; ability to meet deadlines and make sound judgments; and ability to demonstrate tact, diplomacy and conflict resolution skills in dealing with academic, administrative, and technical
