Job Description

Our client, a well-established University, is looking to add a strong Senior Accountant to their team. This is a 5-6 month contract opportunity on a hybrid basis located in Langley BC. This role requires the successful candidate to work on-site 2 days per week (Wed & Thurs).

The Senior Accountant plays a vital role in enhancing budgeting, planning, performance management, and financial systems at the University. If you are a CPA with a minimum of 3 years progressive experience, apply today!

Responsibilities :

  • Monitor the financial performance and status of the University by comparing actual operating results to approved and projected budgets, revenues, and expenditures.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, maintenance, and testing of systems for data collection in a decentralized environment.
  • Foster ongoing communication with divisional business managers, deans, directors, executives, and external entities concerning financial administration and issues.
  • Prepare, deliver, and assess financial performance reports and data to ensure the University provides accurate and timely financial information to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Offer analysis, information, and guidance to the University community on the interpretation of internal and external policies, procedures, and regulations, including sensitive or confidential matters.
  • Support budget maintenance and create financial analyses related to University position control and Faculty Educational Plans.
  • Conduct financial analysis and costing to facilitate the collective agreement bargaining process, involving highly confidential information.
  • Conduct financial analysis to assist operational and value-for-money reviews for divisional unit leaders.
  • Aid in the development, implementation, and monitoring of financial accounting and administrative processes and controls in alignment with University and external agency policies, procedures, and accounting standards.
  • Develop and construct financial models to evaluate the feasibility and impact of new projects and initiatives in collaboration with Faculties and other units.
  • Create standardized business case templates for University-wide use, ensuring consistency in information and format for funding requests and new opportunities.
  • Collaborate with units to formulate business cases supporting new program initiatives, strategic partnerships, and capital investment plans required for the University's growth objectives.
  • Manage the collection, analysis, and presentation of institutional data requested by government bodies and other external agencies, including staff training and supervision within the unit.
  • Provide analysis and interpretation of a variety of information, making financial-related recommendations as needed.
  • Design, develop, and oversee information processes and databases in consultation with other University divisions to support financial research, planning, and accountability.
  • Address specific internal and external financial requests as they arise, some of which may be sensitive and confidential.
  • Work collaboratively with other Financial Services managers to establish and implement departmental policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the preparation and coordination of the University's annual Financial Statements and year-end financial audit.
  • Assist in the maintenance of financial reporting systems to ensure the University's financial reporting complies with government requirements.

Qualifications :

  • Holds a CPA designation, with an active status or near completion.
  • Possesses a minimum of two years of advancing experience, including roles with supervisory or managerial responsibilities.
  • Has at least three years of pertinent experience in financial planning, program evaluation, budget modeling, financial reporting, administration, and assurance.
  • Demonstrates exceptional communication abilities, both in written and verbal forms, emphasizing a dedication to customer support.
  • Proves the capability to apply discretion and negotiation skills while maintaining confidentiality and resolving conflicts.
  • Exhibits a respectful understanding of the varied values and culture found within a university setting.
  • Maintains substantial knowledge of financial reporting practices and accounting procedures.
  • Possesses robust computer proficiency, especially in spreadsheet applications, and showcases the capacity to utilize diverse financial software tools and databases for financial analysis and report creation.
