The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School, which played a critical role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With $76 million in research funding per year, including more than $31.5 million held at DLSPH, the School contributes to improving population health and health policy and health systems through discoveries and innovation in data science and AI, maternal, child and reproductive health, climate change [response], implementation and improvement sciences, preventable disease through vaccines and prevention through [and] wellness such as with diabetes, comparative health policy, sustainable and equitable health systems, global and Indigenous health, among many other areas.

Your opportunity:

At the Waakebiness Institute for Indigenous Health, researchers and educators fromacross the University of Toronto work with community partners and Indigenous peoples to address the complex factors that underlie disparities in health between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

The Institute is engaged in research, educationand service initiatives to overcome health challenges and evaluate interventions to prevent disease and improve health. Its scholars study health policy and administration to improve the delivery and quality of Indigenous health care, and educate Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, so that each year more Canadians and citizens of the world can recognize, reduce and eliminate health inequities.

As Research Officer, you will work closely with the Principal Investigator and project partners to support the successful coordination and delivery of research activities. You will foster positive relationships with project partners, coordinate meetings and project materials, support data management and analysis, and prepare reports and other materialsfor knowledge translation. Your strong organizational, communication, and research skills will allow you to effectively manage multiple priorities and contribute to the progress of research projects.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting research initiatives through literature reviews, data collection, database maintenance, data analysis, and quantitative research coding
  • Coordinating project meetings, including scheduling, preparing agendasand materials, recording action items, and following up on outstanding items
  • Fostering positive relationships with project partners and liaising with contacts to facilitate outreach opportunities
  • Supporting the Principal Investigator by identifying and communicating project concerns, setbacks, and progress
  • Analyzing, organizing, and formatting research data for presentations, reports, and other project materials
  • Drafting progress reports and knowledge translation materialsfor review by the project lead
  • Generating reports, disseminating information, and responding to project-related enquiries within the defined scope of the role


Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant discipline, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant research experience, preferably in a public health environment
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, collecting and analyzing research data, and maintaining research databases
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety and lived experience of indigenous knowledges
  • Experience with quantitative research data and coding
  • Experience coordinating meetings, preparing materials, documenting action items, and following up on project activities
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and relevant research and data management tools
  • Must possess a solid understanding of Indigenous affairs, health, and cultural traditional knowledges
  • Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise judgment, and contribute effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to respond to enquiries within the defined scope of the role and redirect enquiries as appropriate
  • Excellent time managementand problem-solving skills with the ability to meet conflicting priorities and balance multiple projects
  • Demonstrates initiative and possesses a strong commitment to research work with a strong commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Client-services oriented with demonstrated listening and critical thinking skills with the ability to learn new skills
