Position: Fire and Life Safety Inspector – DCC/CDC Facility Maintenance & Support Services (Real Property Operations Unit)
Location: G.T.A, Southern/Northern Ontario Region
Structure: Full-Time Position, On-Site, Travel throughout G.T.A and Southern/Northern Ontario Region

The Fire and Life Safety Inspector is responsible for delivering fire protection and prevention services for DCC/DND facilities, including inspections, fire prevention reporting, fire safety plans and procedures, fire drills and training, hot work permit review, fire protection system impairment coordination, emergency/fire incident support, stakeholder liaison, and monthly reporting. The role supports compliance with the National Fire Code of Canada, NFPA, ULC, CSA, DND Fire Marshal Directives FMD 4004 and FMD 4006, DAOD 4007-1, and other contractually referenced requirements. The position reports directly to the Fire and Life Safety Manager and includes, but is not limited to, the following duties:

• Acts as an assistant to the Fire and Life Safety Manager.
• Conduct fire prevention inspections across DCC/DND facilities, including fire extinguishers, fire suppression systems, detection systems, life safety equipment, housekeeping, means of egress, electrical/fire service areas, and other items identified in the DND fire inspection checklist.
• Prepare and update required DND fire prevention documentation, including CF 80, CF 81, fire safety plans, fire orders, inspection reports, deficiency records, and DND/DCC-required templates.
• Liaise with the Officer in Charge, Fire Wardens, DND Chief Fire Inspector, DCC Representative, building occupants/units, third-party contractors, and municipal fire departments when required.
• Conduct fire drills and deliver Fire Warden, DND CF1416, portable fire extinguisher, and fire prevention/life safety training for applicable units, including theoretical and practical components during regular business hours, evenings, and weekends as required.
• Review, monitor, and issue hot work permits for third-party contractor work and applicable AWRs in accordance with FMD 4004 and the National Fire Code of Canada.
• Support fire protection system impairment procedures, emergency/fire incident response, active construction site inspections, DND OHS committee meetings, Fire Prevention Week activities, and fire investigation/IFSMR coordination with the DND Chief Fire Inspector.
• Prepare monthly reports of completed and scheduled fire and life safety activities, including inspections, deficiencies, corrective activities, and forecasted work, using DND/DCC-required templates.
• Provide timely responses to enquiries from the Fire and Life Safety Manager, DCC Representative, DND Chief Fire Inspector, and other contract stakeholders.
• Maintain complete inspection, testing, maintenance, training, deficiency, impairment, corrective action, and monthly reporting records, including site records retained for six years or for the duration of the contract where applicable.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Post-secondary education in Fire Protection Technology, Building Construction, Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant fire prevention experience.
• NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level 1 acquired through an IFSAC or Pro Board recognized institution.
• NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator I acquired through an IFSAC or Pro Board recognized institution.
• Ability to provide copies of required licences, certificates, and renewals to the DCC Representative before commencement of services and upon renewal.
• Fire Protection Technology Diploma, Fire Prevention Officer Diploma, Ontario Fire College training, CFAA registration, or equivalent relevant credentials is considered an asset.
• Strong written and interpersonal skills required, including the ability to establish effective working relationships and provide quality customer service.
• Must possess a valid G driver's license recognized by the Province of Ontario.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• 2–3 years of Fire and Life Safety inspection or Building Inspection or Property Maintenance Inspection experience in the construction/facilities management & operations industry.
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• Able to commute regularly to the GTA, and travel throughout Ontario (as needed).
• Must obtain and maintain the required reliability and secret security clearances.

The expected salary range for this role is between $60,000 - $80,000 per year. The starting salary will be determined based on several factors such as the successful candidate's qualifications, including but not limited to education and experience. Base pay is one component of Black & McDonald's total rewards package. Total rewards vary by position and may include additional offerings such as group insurance benefits, pension plan, annual discretionary bonus, career development programs, and other HR programs.
