Project Manager (IT)
Client: Government of Alberta – Technology and Innovation
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Work Arrangement: Primarily Remote within Canada; up to 15% onsite attendance in Edmonton
Contract: Full-Time Contract
Hours: 36.25 hours/week
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:15 AM–4:30 PM Alberta Time
Total Hours: Approximately 1,725.50 hours
Travel: Up to 15% to Edmonton
Start: First day of the month
Work Authorization: Must be able to perform the work from within Canada
Position Overview
The Government of Alberta is seeking an Intermediate Project Manager (IT) to provide project delivery oversight and coordination across multiple concurrent, high-priority technology initiatives.
The successful candidate will manage multiple workstreams, coordinate technical and business teams, maintain vendor and stakeholder relationships, manage risks and dependencies, and ensure project deliverables remain aligned with timelines, governance standards, and operational objectives.
The PM will primarily support two major initiatives:
1. Cybersecurity – Legacy Server Remediation
The Cybersecurity program requires project management support for the Legacy Server Remediation Project, addressing critical end-of-life infrastructure and reducing cybersecurity and operational risk.
Key activities include:
- Coordinating remediation of legacy infrastructure, including SQL Server and Windows Server environments.
- Managing project timelines, dependencies, risks, issues, and technical stakeholders.
- Coordinating multiple technical areas and related projects.
- Supporting cybersecurity governance and risk mitigation.
- Maintaining delivery momentum and continuity across remediation activities.
2. SharePoint Online (SPO) Migration Management
The PM will support the completion of complex remaining SharePoint migration and decommissioning activities, including:
- Managing remaining SharePoint 2016 migrations and decommissioning.
- Coordinating delivery of outstanding intranets.
- Managing the extranet migration, including legacy server replacement.
- Managing dependencies related to WFD Farm and PEDs/SIAMS access.
- Coordinating the transition of 22 Power Apps developed to replace SharePoint 2016 customizations into CCS operations.
- Coordinating ministries, approvals, ownership issues, migration activities, and technical dependencies.
- Working with Cybersecurity and other stakeholders to manage legacy platform risks.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage IT projects from initiation through completion.
- Develop and maintain project charters, business cases, project plans, schedules, status reports, risk logs, dashboards, and project closure documentation.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects, resources, dependencies, risks, and issues.
- Develop detailed project schedules, work plans, resource requirements, milestones, and delivery strategies.
- Track project progress against scope, schedule, budget, resources, and objectives.
- Coordinate business, technical, vendor, and cross-departmental stakeholders.
- Work with Program Managers and Project Sponsors to maintain effective project governance and communication.
- Identify, escalate, and mitigate project risks and issues.
- Coordinate project dependencies and interdependencies across related initiatives.
- Prepare and present project deliverables and status updates to leadership, steering committees, and stakeholders.
- Maintain strong relationships with clients, vendors, project teams, and internal partners.
- Support recommendations concerning resources, dependencies, policy implications, and project methodology.
- Develop requirements documentation where required.
- Support change management and communication activities.
- Assist with transition planning and operational handover.
- Assess project outcomes and identify opportunities for future improvements.
- Work within Government of Alberta Project Services standards and controls.
- Leverage Microsoft applications, collaboration tools, AI, and other technology to improve project reporting and communication.
Requirements
Mandatory Qualifications
Education
Candidates must meet one of the following:
- University graduation in Business, Management, or a related discipline plus 4 years of Project Management experience; OR
- Two-year diploma in Business, Management, or a related discipline plus 6 years of Project Management experience; OR
- One-year certificate in Business, Management, or a related discipline plus 7 years of Project Management experience; OR
- 8 years of Project Management experience.
Certification – Mandatory
- Currently active PMP or PGMP certification issued by the Project Management Institute or equivalent.
- A copy of the certification must be provided.
Mandatory Experience
Candidates must demonstrate:
- 5+ years developing project deliverables such as:
- Project charters
- Business cases
- Briefing notes
- Status reports
- Risk logs
- Project closure documentation
- Dashboards
- 5+ years working in a Project Management role.
- 4+ years managing multiple projects concurrently.
- 3+ years successfully implementing IT solutions involving project resources across multiple teams or organizations.
- 3+ years working as a Project Manager on a large, complex custom software application development project, where software was developed in-house for the organization, in an environment comparable in size and complexity to the Government of Alberta.
- 3+ years working with information management and cybersecurity policies, directives, and guidelines within limited timelines.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- 3+ years coordinating project dependencies and plans with related projects.
- 4+ years coordinating government and vendor-wide information management / IT initiatives.
- 5+ years leading and facilitating meetings with stakeholders at all levels.
- 3+ years leading change management and communication planning.
- 3+ years overseeing and implementing server and network infrastructure projects.
- 3+ years overseeing and implementing SharePoint migrations.
- 3+ years working with the Government of Alberta or a Canadian public-sector organization of similar size and complexity.
