Key Activities
Reporting to the Senior Producer, the Company Manager is English Theatre’s key liaison with the artists it engages. The Company Manager is responsible for travel, housing and general welfare for all artists visiting the National Arts Centre, as well as key administrative duties.
Artist Management
•Manages the general health, welfare, and comfort of the company of English Theatre (ET) artists engaged or hosted by the National Arts Centre (NAC);
• Books all artist transportation, balancing necessary scheduling requirements with securing lowest possible travel expense;
• Oversees and coordinates housing for all artists at sponsor hotel in Ottawa, and occasionally in other cities;
• Ensures all immigration requirements are met for artists traveling from outside of Canada;
• Arranges backstage access cards for personnel in each production; arranges set-up of Stage Management offices;
• General Artist hospitality including welcome packages, artist orientation, snack table, callboard, etc.;
• Maintains and updates Artist Guide;
• Arranges “meet & greet” events between visiting companies and ET staff;
• Processes company ticket requests;
• Acts as on-call responder for any routine or unexpected artist health matters;
• Issues the Who/What/Where information sheet in the ET season and circulates to all the relevant internal departments.
Producing Support
• Maintains comprehensive knowledge of the Canadian Theatre Agreement, supporting the producing team in the determination of the final interpretation of the Agreement;
• Provides preliminary response to artists’ issues as they arise, and immediately reporting any such incidents to the producing team;
• Tracks travel, accommodation, and hospitality budgets, providing forecasts to producing team on an as-required basis;
• Participates in issue resolution, with producing team and Managing Director, as required;
• Supports departmental events such as Affinity Group Nights on a limited, as required and pro rata basis with other ET staff members, with clear participation expectations established in advance;
• Other duties commensurate with the administration of live theatre as assigned;
• This position requires regular evening and weekend hours reflective of the dynamic schedule of working at a theatre.
Skill Requirements
• Minimum five (5) years Project Management, Festival Management, or Event Management experience is required;
• Experience in producing, production, stage management or other aspect of professional theatre, including familiarity with the Canadian Theatre Agreement is preferred;
• Experience working with unionized staff is an asset;
• Strong written, oral and interpersonal skills required;
• Ability to evaluate and manage multiple priorities, and adapt quickly to a fast-paced, complex work environment;
• Demonstrating initiative and sound judgment;
• Ability work independently and as part of a team;
• Strong sense for creative processes, and ability to anticipate and support the needs of artists and producers;
Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Teams and Adobe CS;
• Excellent English language skills required, basic communication in French is an asset.
