Job description

Senior Project Manager – Major Infrastructure Projects

Location: Vancouver, BC
Work Model: Hybrid – 4 days in office / 1 day remote
Employment Type: Full-Time

MatchBox Consulting Group is excited to represent a highly respected Canadian infrastructure organization in the search for a Senior Project Manager – Major Infrastructure Projects to support the delivery of a significant, multi-year capital program in the Lower Mainland.

This is a senior project-delivery role for someone who has had real ownership of large, complex capital projects.

It is not a project coordinator role, and it is not intended for someone whose experience has primarily involved supporting, reporting on, or administering major projects without direct accountability for delivery.

Our client is looking for a technically credible project professional who has personally managed meaningful elements of scope, schedule, cost, risk, consultants, contractors and stakeholder interfaces across complex infrastructure projects.

The Opportunity

You will lead and support major infrastructure projects and workstreams within a sophisticated capital-delivery environment.

Projects involve multiple engineering disciplines, consultants, contractors, public agencies, regulatory requirements and external stakeholders. You will work across technical, commercial and stakeholder interfaces to help move projects from planning and design through construction and closeout.

This role requires someone who can understand the technical work, manage competing priorities, identify delivery risks and help drive decisions rather than simply report project status.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the planning, coordination and delivery of major infrastructure projects and project packages

  • Manage project scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality and safety considerations

  • Coordinate engineering design development and third-party interfaces

  • Manage consultants and contractors, including performance, contractual obligations, quality and value

  • Develop and maintain project and workstream management plans

  • Support procurement strategies and consultant and contractor selection

  • Coordinate complex interfaces between internal departments, designers, contractors and external organizations

  • Build effective relationships with municipalities, regulatory agencies, utilities, Indigenous communities and other public and private stakeholders

  • Support project controls, reporting, governance and senior-level decision making

  • Identify delivery risks early and develop practical strategies to resolve them

  • Provide functional guidance to project coordinators and other members of a matrix project team

What We Are Looking For

The title on your current business card matters less than the projects you have actually owned.

To be considered, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • A completed university degree in engineering or another relevant technical discipline

  • At least 5 years of meaningful responsibility delivering complex capital projects

  • Direct experience on infrastructure projects generally in the $15M–$100M+ range

  • Experience working across multiple project lifecycle stages, including planning, design, construction and closeout

  • Direct responsibility for meaningful elements of scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality or contractor performance

  • Experience coordinating multiple consultants, contractors, internal groups and external stakeholders

  • Strong stakeholder and interface-management capability in environments where several organizations may have competing priorities

  • Experience in infrastructure such as transportation, heavy civil, marine, rail, roads, utilities, municipal infrastructure, structures or comparable major capital projects

A P.Eng. and/or PMP would be considered an asset, but neither substitutes for demonstrated project ownership.

What We Mean by Project Ownership

We are deliberately looking beyond resumes that simply list large projects.

A strong candidate should be able to clearly explain:

  • What project did you work on and what was its approximate value?

  • What portion of the project were you personally responsible for?

  • Which lifecycle stages did you actually participate in?

  • What decisions, deliverables or outcomes were yours to own?

  • Which consultants, contractors, agencies or external stakeholders did you manage?

  • What happened when the project encountered a schedule, cost, design, regulatory or interface problem?

  • What did you do to move the issue toward resolution?

If your involvement has primarily been administrative, coordination-only or reporting-focused, this position is likely a step beyond your current level.

Candidates do not need to have spent their entire career within one narrow infrastructure sector. Strong project ownership within adjacent major infrastructure environments can translate very well.

Stakeholder Complexity

This is a highly stakeholder-intensive project environment.

The successful candidate will need to work effectively with technical consultants and contractors while also navigating relationships with municipalities, regulatory bodies, utilities, Indigenous communities and other external partners.

You should be comfortable balancing technical requirements, schedule and commercial realities with stakeholder commitments and broader project objectives.

Strong communication is essential. You must be credible with engineers and construction teams while also being capable of presenting issues clearly to senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders.

The Candidate

You are likely someone who:

  • Understands construction and engineering well enough to challenge assumptions and ask strong technical questions

  • Can operate independently without escalating every issue upward

  • Knows the difference between participating in a major project and actually being accountable for part of its delivery

  • Is comfortable managing consultants rather than simply accepting their recommendations

  • Can organize complex work without becoming buried in process

  • Communicates clearly and professionally with technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Identifies problems early and brings forward practical solutions

  • Can operate within formal project governance while maintaining momentum

  • Is comfortable working in a matrix environment with multiple internal and external parties

Compensation & Benefits

Our client offers a strong total compensation package including:

  • Competitive salary within an established compensation structure

  • Performance-based annual incentive program

  • RRSP matching of up to 7%

  • Comprehensive extended health and dental coverage

  • Health Spending Account

  • Annual fitness allowance

  • 3 weeks of vacation to start

  • 4 annual Personal Care Days

  • Earned Time Off program providing the opportunity to bank additional days off

  • Free parking

  • Hybrid work model with 1 remote day and 4 in-office days per week

The position is based in Vancouver, and the four-day in-office requirement is firm.

Interested?

MatchBox is excited to represent this client on what we believe is an excellent opportunity for experienced infrastructure professionals who want meaningful ownership within a sophisticated major-capital environment.

When applying, we encourage candidates to include two or three representative projects and identify:

Project value | Your role | Your specific ownership | Lifecycle stages | Major stakeholders

You do not need to rewrite your resume around the job posting.

We are much more interested in understanding what you personally delivered, what you owned and how complex the environment really was.

Candidates whose experience demonstrates genuine ownership of large, complex infrastructure projects will be contacted for further discussion.
