Junior Estimator

MatchBox Consulting Group is recruiting a Civil Estimator for an established construction contractor in Prince George, BC. This position will support the preparation of bids for civil and heavy civil projects, including bridges, roads, earthworks, drainage systems, concrete structures, demolition, and piling work.

The ideal candidate understands how projects are built in the field and can translate drawings, specifications, and contractual requirements into accurate, competitive estimates.

Responsibilities

• Review drawings, specifications, contracts, and tender documents to develop a clear understanding of project scope and submission requirements.

• Identify constructability concerns, contractual obligations, and potential project risks during the bidding process.

• Track addenda and incorporate scope or specification changes into active estimates.

• Prepare detailed quantity take-offs covering labour, equipment, materials, and subcontracted work.

• Develop preliminary schedules and key project milestones to support pricing and execution planning.

• Request, compare, and evaluate quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.

• Build complete project estimates using Bid2Win or Excel-based estimating tools.

• Account for direct costs, indirect costs, overhead, contingencies, and project margins.

• Coordinate bid requirements with internal teams, consultants, suppliers, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders.

• Prepare tender packages for internal review and final submission.

• Ensure bids are complete, accurate, and submitted within required deadlines.

• Review project execution strategies, budgets, and schedules to identify risks and opportunities before construction begins.

• Manage multiple estimates and competing submission deadlines.

Qualifications

• At least two years of construction experience in estimating, project coordination, or project management.

• Previous estimating experience with a civil or heavy civil contractor is strongly preferred.

• Experience with bridges, roadwork, earthworks, drainage, concrete structures, demolition, or pile driving is considered an asset.

• Exposure to forestry, mining, oil and gas, or public infrastructure projects is beneficial.

• A diploma or degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field is an asset but is not required.

• Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and passport.

• Legally authorized to work in Canada.

Skills and Experience

• Strong understanding of civil construction methods, specifications, and sequencing.

• Knowledge of quantity take-offs, subcontractor procurement, cost development, tender preparation, and bid-closing procedures.

• Ability to interpret technical drawings and contractual documentation.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Project.

• Experience using construction estimating software; Bid2Win experience is preferred.

• Familiarity with Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff, or AutoCAD is an asset.

• Strong analytical and critical-thinking abilities.

• Effective written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work independently while coordinating with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage several active bids at once.

• Comfortable working in a fast-moving, deadline-focused construction environment.
