What- The Role:
The Intermediate Communications Specialist will provide professional communications support to a public-sector organization, working closely with senior leadership, project teams, and stakeholders. The role will develop and deliver communications that support organizational change, executive messaging, employee engagement, technology initiatives, and strategic priorities.
The successful candidate will create clear, consistent, and timely communications for both internal and external audiences, translating complex business and technical information into accessible, audience-appropriate messaging.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop executive communications, organizational announcements, leadership messages, and employee communications.
- Prepare regular branch communications based on information from senior leadership.
- Develop communication strategies and plans supporting organizational change and technology initiatives.
- Create presentations, briefing notes, speaking notes, newsletters, FAQs, infographics, and other communication materials.
- Support branding and visual identity for organizational initiatives and ensure consistency across materials.
- Translate complex business and technical information into clear, concise communications.
- Support change initiatives through employee engagement and change communications.
- Review, edit, and quality-assure communications prepared by project teams and leadership.
- Review operational communications, including service outage and maintenance notifications, and recommend improvements to clarity, consistency, and effectiveness.
- Develop communication templates and guidance for operational and executive communications.
- Collaborate with executives, managers, subject matter experts, and project teams to gather information and develop communications.
- Develop presentations and supporting materials for executive meetings, leadership forums, town halls, and stakeholder sessions.
- Provide communications advice to leadership on messaging and stakeholder engagement.
- Ensure communications follow organizational standards, visual identity requirements, and plain-language principles.
Who – The Candidate:
- Education: Degree in Communications, Commerce or a related field plus 4+ years of related experience, or a diploma plus 6+ years. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work professionally with a diverse range of people.
- Communication planning: 2+ years developing and implementing communication plans.
- Internal/executive communications: 3+ years developing professional internal communications, including leadership messaging, employee communications, announcements, newsletters, and briefing materials.
- Presentations: 3+ years developing professional presentations and visual communication materials for senior leadership, including advanced PowerPoint skills.
- Editing/business writing: 3+ years of professional writing, editing, and translating complex business or technical information into clear, concise communications.
- Communications review: 2+ years reviewing communications and recommending improvements to clarity, consistency, effectiveness, and audience suitability.
- Senior stakeholder experience: 2+ years working directly with executives, senior leaders, managers, and subject matter experts to develop communications and provide communications advice.
Nice to have
- Experience with branding, visual identity, templates, infographics, and tools such as Adobe Creative Suite or Canva.
- Experience communicating technology service disruptions, outages, maintenance, incidents, or service changes.
- Communications experience in a technology, IT, digital transformation, or technical environment.
- Experience within government, public sector, or another complex/regulated organization.
- Experience supporting organizational change, transformation, restructuring, or change management initiatives.
- Experience using SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, or similar digital communication platforms.
How much:
$40-43/hr commensurate with experience + 4% vacation pay
Where:
Edmonton, AB, this is an onsite role.
