RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and support a wide range of commissioning, recommissioning, building optimization, decarbonization, and engineering projects for healthcare, institutional, commercial, municipal, and educational facilities.
- extensive experience in building mechanical systems, Building Automation Systems (BAS), energy engineering, HVAC optimization, commissioning, and low-carbon building technologies.
- Work directly with clients, facility managers, contractors, architects, engineers, and controls specialists throughout all phases of projects, from planning and design through construction, commissioning, optimization, and post-occupancy verification.
Building Commissioning
- Lead commissioning projects for new and existing buildings in accordance with ASHRAE Guideline 0, ASHRAE Guideline 1, CSA, and industry best practices.
- Prepare and maintain Commissioning Plans, Commissioning Specifications, Functional Performance Test Procedures, Deficiency Logs, and Final Commissioning Reports.
- Develop and review Owner's Project Requirements (OPR), Basis of Design (BOD), and commissioning documentation.
- Conduct design reviews during schematic design, design development, and construction documentation phases.
- Coordinate commissioning activities with owners, consultants, contractors, and vendors.
- Witness equipment start-up, TAB activities, system demonstrations, and functional performance testing.
- Lead commissioning meetings and issue meeting minutes and progress reports.
- Verify system operation during occupancy and seasonal commissioning.
Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) & Building Optimization
- Perform comprehensive building investigations and HVAC system assessments.
- Analyze BAS trends, operating sequences, alarms, schedules, and equipment performance.
- Identify operational deficiencies and develop corrective actions.
- Optimize HVAC system operation for improved comfort, reliability, and energy performance.
- Develop and implement recommissioning measures.
- Verify operational improvements through field testing and data analysis.
- Conduct Measurement & Verification (M&V) of implemented Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs).
Energy Engineering & Decarbonization
- Perform energy assessments and building performance evaluations.
- Develop Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) for HVAC, controls, lighting, and central plants.
- Prepare detailed engineering calculations for: Energy savings Utility cost savings Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reductions Carbon emissions Peak demand reduction Lifecycle cost analysis Simple payback Return on Investment (ROI)
- Prepare Building Decarbonization and GHG Reduction Pathway Studies.
- Evaluate electrification opportunities, including heat pumps, geothermal systems, thermal storage, and renewable energy integration.
- Develop phased decarbonization roadmaps aligned with client capital planning.
- Support clients pursuing Net Zero Carbon and sustainability initiatives.
Mechanical Engineering
- Review and design HVAC systems for new construction and retrofit projects.
- Review mechanical, controls, and electrical drawings for compliance with project requirements.
- Prepare engineering reports and technical recommendations.
- Perform heating and cooling load calculations.
- Review equipment selections and control strategies.
- Support HVAC design-build projects.
- Develop conceptual HVAC solutions and retrofit strategies.
Building Automation Systems (BAS)
- Review and optimize HVAC control sequences.
- Develop and improve BAS sequences of operation.
- Analyze BAS graphics, trends, alarms, and control logic.
- Support BAS modernization and integration projects.
- Coordinate BAS functional testing and point-to-point verification.
- Work with Niagara, BACnet, Modbus, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Delta Controls, Distech, Schneider Electric, and other major BAS platforms.
Energy Modelling & Analytics
- Perform building energy modelling and simulation.
- Analyze utility consumption data.
- Benchmark building performance.
- Evaluate energy-saving opportunities using engineering software.
- Support incentive applications and utility conservation programs.
Project Management & Client Relations
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Prepare proposals, technical reports, and presentations.
- Attend client meetings and conduct site visits.
- Mentor junior engineers and commissioning specialists.
- Ensure projects are delivered on schedule and within budget.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario, or eligible for registration.
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in building mechanical systems.
- Extensive experience in Building Commissioning and Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx).
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, hydronic systems, air distribution systems, central plants, and controls.
- Strong understanding of Building Automation Systems (BAS).
- Excellent understanding of ASHRAE standards, CSA standards, Ontario Building Code, and applicable industry guidelines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent report writing and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Valid Ontario driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites throughout Ontario.
