BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1995 by a group of experienced certification and testing experts, QAI is an independent third-party testing, inspection, and certification organization that serves the building, technology, and construction industries (among others) with cost-effective solutions through our in-house capabilities/services, and an established world-wide network of qualified affiliates. The QAI name and logo have become well-recognized throughout the Certification world resulting in steady growth of our Certification, Testing, and Inspection business streams.


QAI is currently looking for a Technician - Fire testing - to join our Building Products team in Burnaby, BC. Our ideal candidate would be someone who has a technical diploma and/or two years of experience or more, working in a structural or construction testing environment in the testing, inspection, and certification industry, with knowledge of common ASTM, UL and CSA test methods relating to building products. Flexibility in work schedule and working overtime, if needed, is ideal.


DUTIES: You will perform, but not be limited to the following duties:

Perform laboratory testing, including fire resistance testing of doors, frames, wall systems, and firestopping, with hands-on construction and setup of test assemblies in accordance with building codes and test standards.Build and assemble test samples such as walls, floors, doors, and other assemblies according to requirements.Read and interpret drawings, test standards, and client specifications to correctly set up test assemblies. Perform testing, collect data, and assist with or prepare test reports under supervision or independently.Record test data, observations, and deviations in a clear and accurate manner during and after testingSafely operate tools, equipment, and material devices for construction and setupDisassemble and dispose of test setups following completion of testing, maintaining a clean and organized lab environmentCooperate with others and act professionallyMaintain lab equipment, tools, and devices as requiredEffectively / efficiently deals with multiple projects, conflicting timelines, and changing prioritiesLearn key standards in subject area.Work with the team to effectively resolve technical issues and determine the appropriate interpretation of technical requirements. Maintains effective communication with internal staff and clients (willingness to travel as needed)Understanding and ability to navigate the quality management system and adhere to QAI’s policiesMeet department goals and objectives Other duties as assigned by the manager or its designee.


QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will:

Technical diploma, trade certification, or equivalent experience in construction/ carpentry, mechanical systems, or a related fieldExperience in construction/carpentry, fabrication, or testing environmentsKnowledge of construction / laboratory instrumentation / data acquisition / operating principles / calibration & general laboratory procedures; Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, technical specifications, and test standardsStrong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and build accuracyPhysically capable of lifting heavy materials and performing manual work in a lab/shop environmentEffective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a technical team.Has a basic understanding of quality procedures and HR policies.Understanding of workplace safety practices and experience working in regulated environments.Familiar with MS Office and other software relevant to the position.


KEY TECHNICAL COMPETENCE:

    Accepts instruction and follows it for testing outside of their general scope of knowledge and experience.Able to grasp general concepts in a field of testing and apply it to specific test methods.Able to perform testing and as knowledge grows in a specific field of testing graduates to more complex testing methods.Seeks assistance and knowledge from more senior personnel when a specific requirement is outside of their general scope of knowledge.Good working knowledge of the test methods in their specific discipline.Able to multi-task with some degree of efficiency and accuracy.Maintains a sense of ownership and responsibility for projects assigned to them.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Candidates must hold a valid driver’s license.
