Job description

Job Description

The Architectural Site Superintendent leads the safe, coordinated and productive field execution of assigned architectural trade packages across Ontario Line South station work areas. The role supervises subcontractors and self-perform resources, confirms work-front readiness, coordinates interfaces with civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and systems teams, and drives work to approved drawings, specifications, quality requirements and project milestones.

This is a hands-on field leadership role. The successful candidate will establish clear daily priorities, remove constraints before they affect production, maintain reliable site records, and lead architectural fit-out from area release through inspection, deficiency close-out and turnover.

Key Accountabilities:

Field Leadership, Sueprvision & Productivity

  • Lead daily field operations for assigned architectural work areas and communicate priorities, sequence, constraints and changes to forepersons, subcontractors and field coordinators.
  • Coordinate labour, supervision, equipment, access and materials across architectural packages such as façade, roofing, partitions, wall cladding, ceilings, flooring, doors and hardware, millwork, metalwork, painting, signage and architectural specialties, as applicable.
  • Chair daily pre-start and coordination huddles; confirm crews understand the work plan, approved information, interfaces and expected production.
  • Monitor installation progress and workforce utilization, address field conflicts promptly, and escalate material risks with recommended actions.
  • Support a respectful, inclusive and accountable site culture across a diverse workforce.

Health, Safety, Environment & Emergency Readiness

  • Demonstrate visible safety leadership and enforce the project HSE plan, permits, procedures and site rules.
  • Confirm hazard assessments, safe work plans, toolbox talks, inspections and corrective actions are complete and suitable before and during work.
  • Stop unsafe work, correct hazards, report incidents and near misses, and participate in investigations and preventive actions.
  • Coordinate safe access, housekeeping, temporary protection, lifting and hoisting, work at height, hot work, silica and dust controls, confined spaces and other high-risk activities, where applicable.
  • Work with HSE and logistics teams to ensure emergency arrangements, exclusion zones and public or third-party interfaces are maintained.

Planning, Schedule, Logistics & Trade Interfaces

  • Develop and maintain detailed short-term plans and three- to six-week look-ahead schedules aligned with contractual milestones and area handover dates.
  • Coordinate architectural works with civil, structural, waterproofing, firestopping, MEP, vertical transportation, communications, security, signage, testing and commissioning interfaces.
  • Track quantities and actual progress against plan; identify variance, critical constraints and out-of-sequence work; implement recovery or resequencing measures with the project team.
  • Coordinate deliveries, laydown, hoisting, material storage, environmental conditions and protection of finished work in constrained station areas.

Quality, Technical Control, Records & Cost Awareness

  • Ensure installations comply with approved drawings, specifications, samples and mock-ups, manufacturers requirements, method statements, inspection and test plans, and project quality procedures.
  • Coordinate first-work inspections, hold points, testing, field reviews, deficiencies, non-conformances and turnover records with Quality, Design and Engineering teams.
  • Verify architectural tolerances, substrates, openings, elevations, setting-out and interface conditions before installation; prevent concealment of incomplete or unaccepted work.
  • Maintain complete daily reports covering labour, equipment, installed quantities, deliveries, weather and environmental conditions, delays, safety, quality, access restrictions and changed conditions.
  • Preserve records supporting progress measurement, as-built information, change management, subcontract administration and claims avoidance; identify potential cost and schedule impacts early.

Qualifications

  • College diploma or university degree in architecture, architectural technology, civil engineering, construction engineering technology, construction management or a related discipline.
  • At least 7 years of progressive construction experience, including at least 3 years supervising field crews and architectural subcontractors.
  • Major transit or infrastructure experience in an urban environment is an asset.
  • Experience with high-quality public-facing finishes, multiple mock-ups, performance testing, phased handovers, occupied or stakeholder-sensitive interfaces, and unionized construction is an asset.
  • Demonstrated delivery of architectural fit-out or finish scopes on complex transit, infrastructure, commercial, institutional or high-rise projects.
  • Experience coordinating multiple trades in constrained, high-activity areas and taking work through inspection, deficiency close-out and turnover.
  • Strong understanding of architectural drawings, specifications, shop drawings, reflected ceiling plans, room data, finish schedules, details, tolerances, sequencing and subcontract scope boundaries.
  • Proven field leadership, planning, coordination, conflict-resolution and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to identify incomplete design information and constructability or interface risks, initiate RFIs, and communicate practical field solutions without bypassing approval processes.
  • Ability to interpret schedule information, measure progress, identify constraints and develop practical recovery plans.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including concise daily reporting and timely escalation of safety, quality, schedule and commercial risk.
  • Commercial awareness regarding labour, material, equipment, productivity, delays, rework and changed conditions.
  • Knowledge of station fit-out, rail or transit interfaces, accessibility requirements, environmental controls, turnover and commissioning processes is an asset.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to obtain before assignment.
  • Ontario supervisor health and safety awareness training.
  • Working at Heights, WHMIS and project-specific training as required for assigned duties.
  • Valid driver licence where driving is required for the assignment.
  • Gold Seal Superintendent designation, trade certification, NCSO/CRSP credential or professional engineering status is an asset.
  • Training in hoisting and rigging, confined space, incident investigation, rail or transit safety, firestopping inspection, or quality auditing is an asset.
