We are a fully delegated Indigenous Child & Family Service Agency providing programs and services to Indigenous children, youth, and families on and off reserve within Stó:lō Territory in the Fraser Valley between Yale First Nation and Surrey BC.

Our programs and services are created and delivered with the support of our Elders Advisory Council with special attention on strengthening culture and identity, while honoring the strength of families.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Láts’ú:mexw means the away from home living in Stó:lō Territory.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Staff and Community Relations, and working as part of a team, the Láts’ú:mexw Coordinator will be focused virtually on building bridges to assist the Executive Director of Staff and Community Relations with relationship building to leadership in + communities in BC outside of Stó:lō Territory, across Canada and into the United States. The Láts’ú:mexw Coordinator will also assist Xyólheméylh staff as requested, to help with connections to ensure children/youth learn about their home community(s), walk the land, and create a lifelong connections, while learning who they are and honoring their culture and inherent right to identity.

LÁTS’Ú:MEXW COORDINATOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Gain knowledge of + communities as it relates to supporting the children, and youth Xyólheméylh is responsible for, and will provide any assistance needed to ensure that connection is made to the community the child/youth is registered to or entitled to be registered to.
  • Create an internal registry database of the children and youth in care and the communities they belong to or are entitled to belong to that will be reviewed and tracked by the Executive Director of Programs, and Executive Director of Staff and Community Relations.
  • Develop a workplan to assist the Executive Director of Staff and Community Relations and offer assistance to social workers to help create a formal connection between the child/youth and the community.
  • Assist Xyólheméylh staff as requested, to help with connections to ensure children/youth learn about their home community(s), walk the land, and create a lifelong connections, while learning who they are and honoring their culture and inherent right to identity.
  • Promote Xyólheméylh vision, mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Liaise and communicate as requested to DOO’s, and Elders to assess needs and offer connections assistance.
  • Monitor and evaluate activities and write reports as requested by Executive Director of Staff and Community Relations and Executive Director of Programs.

Funding for this position has been approved for an Indigenous candidate. A hiring preference will apply for qualified candidates of Indigenous ancestry. This is a virtual position and no travel to communities is part of this role.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Passion for building relationships
  • Employee with Post-secondary studies in Social Work or Indigenous Studies
  • Knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous culture and historical impacts effect the development of individuals and communities.
  • Understanding of family systems and child development along with relevant legislation.
  • Ability to practice standards set out in the B.C. Child, Family and Community Services Act, and gain an understanding of the Federal Legislation: An Act Representing First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth, and families (the Act formerly known as Bill C-92).
  • An ability to develop respectable relationships with First Nation communities, Métis Communities and equivalent personal experience may be accepted.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write concise reports for various audiences.
  • Ability to form trusting, respectful and effective relationships with Indigenous communities and walk alongside Xyólheméylh staff in partnership when assistance is requested.
  • Computer skills for Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to adapt to a hybrid model of working in office and from home, with adequate internet connectivity and audio-video capability and have the ability to communicate with various indigenous communities and staff.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License; reliable transportation with adequate vehicle insurance.
  • Pursuant to Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry.
