Job description

Nova Hotels is a Canadian, family-owned and operated hotel group with 13 full and limited-service hotels across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories. At Nova, hospitality starts with people. We care about creating comfortable stays for our guests, memorable events for our clients, and a supportive workplace for our teams.

Whether we are helping a guest settle in, responding to a concern, or solving an unexpected challenge, our team shows up with care, accountability, and a willingness to find a way.

We are looking for a Guest Security Officer to support the safety, security, and overall guest experience at our hotel. This role is ideal for someone who is observant, calm under pressure, guest-focused, and confident handling situations professionally.

The shifts for this position may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, based on business needs.

About the Role

As the Guest Security Officer, you will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day safety and security of the hotel, surrounding property, guests, and team members. This includes monitoring hallways, public areas, restaurants, parking lots, exterior areas, and responding to concerns related to guest rooms or hotel operations.

This is a hands-on role that requires good judgment, strong communication, and the ability to respond quickly and professionally when issues arise. You will also support other departments when needed, including the Front Desk and Food & Beverage teams, to help ensure guests receive safe, welcoming, and reliable service.

What You’ll Do

  • Follow all established and future security policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures
  • Conduct regular patrols of hallways, public areas, parking lots, exterior areas, and hotel floors
  • Monitor the building and surrounding property for safety, security, maintenance, or suspicious concerns
  • Complete security patrol logs, incident reports, accident reports, and related documentation accurately and on time
  • Respond promptly to guest, associate, or property-related incidents
  • Handle difficult guest inquiries or concerns professionally and calmly
  • Assist with problem resolution and service recovery when appropriate
  • Communicate effectively with guests, team members, supervisors, and department leaders
  • Support the Front Desk and Food & Beverage teams when needed, including after-hours room service delivery, amenity delivery, luggage assistance, room checks, and room moves
  • Report safety hazards, security concerns, suspicious circumstances, and maintenance issues immediately to the appropriate leader
  • Respond to emergency situations and take appropriate action to help safeguard guests, team members, and the hotel
  • Investigate and report guest or associate injuries, thefts, assaults, property loss, vandalism, or other incidents as required
  • Support preventative safety and security programs throughout the hotel
  • Help maintain safe working conditions within the hotel
  • Maintain exterior cleanliness and safety, including shoveling snow and removing debris as required
  • Help ensure team members follow safety rules and procedures
  • Support enforcement of liquor laws, fire codes, and hotel safety standards
  • Check identification of unfamiliar individuals in staff-only areas
  • Ensure contractors and visitors follow the hotel’s sign-in procedures
  • Keep the General Manager or immediate leader informed of significant concerns, unusual incidents, or urgent matters
  • Follow Nova Hotels standards for hygiene, grooming, health and safety, fire safety, key controls, and guest interactions
  • Provide exceptional guest service at all times
  • Complete other related duties as assigned

What We’re Looking For

  • High school diploma required
  • Valid security licence, where required under applicable provincial legislation
  • PROTECT certification is considered an asset, where applicable
  • CPR certification required or willingness to obtain
  • Previous safety, security, or loss prevention training is considered an asset
  • Previous hospitality training is considered an asset
  • 1–2 years of previous experience in a safety or security role required
  • 1–2 years of hospitality, hotel, or customer service experience is considered an asset
  • Ability to provide a criminal record/security clearance from local authorities
  • Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and solutions-focused under pressure
  • Strong observation skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to complete clear, accurate written reports
  • Reliable, responsible, and able to work independently
  • Flexible availability, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays

Key Strengths for Success

  • You care about creating a safe and welcoming environment
  • You are calm, observant, and professional in difficult situations
  • You communicate clearly and respectfully with guests and team members
  • You take ownership of safety concerns and follow through on details
  • You understand that great security is also great guest service
  • You lead by example through reliability, good judgment, and accountability
  • You are willing to jump in and support the team when needed

Safety and Security Expectations

The Guest Security Officer is expected to observe safety and security procedures at all times, report potentially unsafe conditions, and use equipment and materials properly. This role requires professionalism, confidentiality, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to protecting guests, team members, and hotel property.

Travel Requirement

Due to limited public transportation during certain shifts, the successful candidate must be able to travel to and from work reliably without relying on public transit.

What We Offer

At Nova Hotels, you will be part of a supportive, team-oriented workplace where people look out for one another and take pride in creating great guest and client experiences.

We offer:

  • Competitive wages
  • Meal program
  • Extended health benefits for full-time employees
  • Employee discounts in our food and beverage outlets
  • Staff rates at Nova Hotels across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories
  • Friends and family hotel rates
  • Opportunities to learn, grow, and build your hospitality career

Eligibility

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

We thank all applicants for their interest in Nova Hotels. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
