Job description

Part-Time / Casual Elementary (Primary Focused) Teacher/Tutor

Excited by early readers? Moved by math facts? Think a perfectly printed lowercase “a” is worth celebrating?

We are currently seeking part-time teacher-tutors at Oxford Learning London Bostwick who especially love working with students in Kindergarten through Grade 2, while also feeling comfortable supporting students through Grade 8.

This position is perfect for someone who gets genuinely excited about helping young learners build the foundations they will use throughout school, but who also enjoys working with older students as their skills become more complex and independent.

Our program helps students strengthen academic skills while also developing the cognitive and learning skills behind them. A love of teaching students HOW to learn is a must!

The Role

At Oxford Learning, we help students improve their academic and learning skills in a small-group setting. Our class sizes are small, with a maximum of three students per teacher.

While we are specifically looking for someone who loves working with our youngest learners, teachers at Oxford Learning work with a range of ages. During a shift, you may move from helping a Grade 1 student blend sounds and build early number sense to supporting a Grade 6 student with reading comprehension or a Grade 8 student with math. Being able to adjust your communication, energy, and teaching approach for different ages is an important part of the role.

With our youngest students, that means keeping learning structured, engaging, encouraging, and sometimes a little silly!

Our teachers explain and guide students through provided academic material while simultaneously helping them develop their cognitive learning skills.

You must follow Oxford Learning philosophies and methodologies, and full training will be provided.

You will not be required to lesson plan or create learning materials for students. We do that for you!

Your role also includes reporting on concepts covered and cognitive skills discussed, monitoring student progress, and ensuring programming moves at an appropriate pace. All of this is completed during your scheduled shift. You will never be expected to bring work home.

Classes at Oxford Learning St. Thomas take place during after-school hours, from 4pm–8pm Monday through Thursday, as well as Saturdays from 9am–12pm.

Our Teachers Are:

  • Reliable
  • Flexible
  • Patient
  • Consistent
  • Kind
  • Fun
  • Encouraging
  • Comfortable being a little bit silly when the moment calls for it
  • Genuinely excited about small wins

The Successful Applicant Is:

  • Someone who genuinely enjoys working with young children, particularly students in Kindergarten through Grade 2
  • Comfortable and enthusiastic about also working with students through Grade 8
  • Able to shift their teaching style appropriately between a beginning reader, an upper-elementary student, and a middle-school learner
  • Excited to teach foundational reading, writing, printing, and math skills while also supporting increasingly complex literacy, numeracy, and learning skills with older students
  • Patient with repetition and understands that young learners may need to hear, see, practise, and experience something many times before it sticks
  • Able to keep expectations consistent while making students feel safe, capable, and successful
  • Comfortable redirecting wiggly bodies, wandering attention, reluctant learners, and the occasional “I don’t want to!”
  • Available a minimum of two evenings per week beginning at 4pm, and available at least two Saturday mornings each month
  • Comfortable working with students who work and learn “outside the box,” including students who are neurodivergent and/or have diagnosed LD's.
  • Willing to make a consistent commitment through the school year
  • Not afraid to take risks, try a different approach, and ask questions
  • Able to commute reliably to the Wonderland and Southdale area to work in person. This is not an online position and relocation packages are not available
  • Able to provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Check prior to working with students

Must Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or similar certification in a relevant field. Post-secondary students with tutoring or teaching experience will also be considered
  • Experience working with elementary-aged children
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English
  • Ability to multitask and balance working with up to three students at a time
  • Ability to break concepts into small, manageable steps
  • Ability to guide students toward answers rather than simply giving them the answer
  • Ability to stay calm, positive, and professional, even when a five-year-old has very different plans for the evening

Nice to Haves

  • Experience teaching Kindergarten, Grade 1, or Grade 2
  • Experience with early literacy, phonics, or beginning readers
  • Experience supporting printing and early writing development
  • Teaching certification in Ontario
  • French written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to teach additional elementary or secondary subjects

What We Offer

  • Paid training
  • Ongoing professional development and training opportunities
  • Frequent check-ins, feedback, and coaching
  • Hands-on development of teaching skills
  • All teaching materials and programming provided
  • No lesson planning at home
  • Flexibility and accommodation for scheduling needs and requests
  • A safe, understanding, and accepting atmosphere
  • A workplace where celebrating a student finally remembering a tricky letter sound is considered a completely legitimate reason to get excited

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $19 – $20 / hour

Schedule:

  • Monday to Thursday evenings
  • Saturday mornings

If helping a six-year-old discover that they really CAN read sounds exciting, and you’re equally happy helping an older student finally make sense of a tricky concept, we’d love to hear from you. Apply now!
