BUILD YOUR CAREER AT BLACK & MCDONALD

Black & McDonald is an integrated, multi-trade service provider that delivers high-quality construction, facilities management, and technical solutions safely. We are a family-owned and family-run company that employs thousands of highly skilled and talented professionals across North America. With over one hundred years of diverse market experience, we are a forward-thinking organization with a strong record of delivering operational excellence and customer-focused solutions that stand the test of time.

ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Black & McDonald's Facilities Management team is growing! We are seeking a dependable and motivated Facilities Technician to support the day-to-day operations and ongoing performance of a high-occupancy residential facility.

This is an essential on-site role responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overall upkeep of the building. The position requires a broad range of hands-on technical skills, including minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general building maintenance. You will be proactive in identifying and addressing maintenance issues, ensuring a safe, functional, and well-maintained environment for occupants and guests.

In addition to executing maintenance work, you will play a key role in coordinating work orders, supporting service vendors, and helping plan and prioritize maintenance activities. This role requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

The ideal candidate takes ownership of their work, responds effectively to issues, and looks for opportunities to improve building performance and service delivery. This position offers the opportunity to develop both technical and operational skills, making it a strong fit for someone looking to build a long-term career in facilities management.

General duties & responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and life safety systems to ensure reliable building operations.
  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective, long-term solutions.
  • Conduct routine inspections and proactively address deficiencies to maintain safety, compliance, and overall building performance.
  • Manage and prioritize work orders using CMMS, ensuring timely completion, accurate documentation, and strong follow-through.
  • Coordinate and oversee service vendors and contractors, ensuring work is completed safely, within scope, and to quality standards.
  • Perform general building repairs, including drywall patching, painting, minor plumbing and electrical work, carpentry, and fixture replacements.
  • Respond to service requests in a timely manner, diagnosing and resolving issues related to building systems and general upkeep.
  • Support day-to-day building operations, including unit turnovers, furniture or equipment setup, and maintaining clean, organized mechanical and common areas.
  • Monitor parts and supply inventory and assist with planning maintenance activities to maintain efficiency and readiness.
  • Maintain building grounds and common areas, supporting cleanliness, safety, and overall curb appeal.
  • Respond to urgent issues and after-hours calls as required, stabilizing situations and coordinating resolution.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, reduce repeat issues, and improve service delivery.
  • Follow all health and safety procedures and ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Diploma or certificate in building maintenance, facilities management, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Trade certificate (e.g., electrical, plumbing, HVAC) are considered an asset.
  • A Facilities Management Certificate is an asset (an excellent way to build your career in this field, though it not mandatory).

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 1–3 years of experience in facilities management, facilities maintenance, or a similar technical role.
  • Experience performing general building repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience using CMMS or work order systems is an asset.
  • Exposure to vendor coordination and maintenance planning is an asset.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Takes ownership of tasks and demonstrates accountability and follow-through.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Customer-service oriented with a professional and respectful approach.
  • Adaptable and able to respond effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Committed to safety, quality workmanship, and continuous improvement.
  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude with troubleshooting capability.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic technical documents and manuals.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, and Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and performing hands-on maintenance tasks.
  • Valid Ontario G driver's license is preferred.
  • Ability to pass background screening where required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Full-time, on-site position (Monday to Friday, day shift), with occasional after-hours availability for emergencies or operational needs.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

This is a regular, full-time position with an hourly rate of $28.85 – $31.25. The starting wage will be determined based on several factors such as the successful candidate's qualifications, including but not limited to education and experience. Base pay is one component of Black & McDonald's total rewards package. Total rewards vary by position and may include additional offerings such as group insurance benefits, pension plan, career development programs, and other HR programs.

WHY JOIN BLACK & MCDONALD?

This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of building operations, develop your technical skills, and gain exposure to maintenance planning and coordination.
