Construction Technologist

Location: Surrey, BC
Duration: 12-Month Contract
Work Arrangement: Full-Time Onsite Initially, with Potential for Hybrid After 6 Months
Travel: Site Visits Across BC as Required

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Construction Technologist to support one of British Columbia’s largest utility providers. This role will support construction projects through a combination of planning, estimating, scheduling, project coordination, cost control, and field support.

The ideal candidate will bring approximately 5–10 years of relevant experience from a combination of engineering, construction management, project management, or project coordination. Experience with transmission or distribution line projects would be particularly valuable, although it is not required.

Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed construction cost estimates based on engineering specifications, contract requirements, labour, equipment, and material requirements.

• Complete quantity takeoffs and develop material, component, and construction cost calculations.

• Develop and maintain project schedules and coordinate activities across assigned construction projects.

• Review drawings, specifications, material lists, and other technical documentation.

• Prepare documentation for the procurement of construction materials, equipment, and subcontracted services.

• Track equipment costs, production rates, material costs, and other project financial information.

• Review cost and progress reports, compare projected costs against estimates, and identify potential schedule or budget impacts.

• Support bid analysis by reviewing contractor submissions, quantities, and cost calculations.

• Provide technical coordination and support to field crews, contractors, and internal project teams.

• Assist with construction planning, field coordination, and resolution of project issues.

• Support basic drafting, design, and site survey activities as required.

• Prepare and review technical reports, project data, schedules, graphs, and other project documentation.

• Participate as an active member of multidisciplinary construction project teams.

• Travel to project sites throughout British Columbia as required.

Qualifications

• Approximately 5–10 years of experience in construction, engineering, project management, construction management, project coordination, or a combination of these areas.

• Diploma of Technology, Engineering degree, Project Management degree, or another relevant construction-related qualification.

• Candidates with relevant trades qualifications combined with project management experience are also encouraged to apply.

• Strong construction estimating, scheduling, planning, and coordination skills.

• Knowledge of Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical construction, with working knowledge of other disciplines considered beneficial.

• Strong analytical skills with the ability to review project costs, schedules, and progress information.

• Understanding of project management principles and construction practices.

• Ability to review engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.

• Strong computer skills related to construction estimating, scheduling, costing, design, and project management.

• Strong interpersonal, written communication, and negotiation skills.

• Ability to coordinate effectively with construction trades and multidisciplinary project teams.

• Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

Nice to Have

• Transmission Line and/or Distribution Line experience.

• Previous experience within an electrical utility environment.

• Experience supporting generation, substation, transmission, or distribution infrastructure.

• Experience combining technical engineering knowledge with project or construction coordination responsibilities.
