POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Transnational and/or South Asian Feminisms, with complementary expertise in Diaspora Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

The successful applicant will teach in the Department’s Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Program and will hold a graduate appointment at the on the St. George campus.

This position is being advertised concurrently with the Assistant Professor – Transnational and/or South Asian Feminisms (Req 49200); however, only one appointment will be made. REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Women and Gender Studies or a related area in the humanities or social sciences, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching in one or more of the following: feminist analyses of empire, colonial/postcolonial histories, and transnational formations of gender and sexuality. Successful candidates use interdisciplinary, non-Western-centric methods including digital and archival approaches to diasporic feminist knowledge production, with particular attention to race, caste, and ethnicity. Candidates must have an established international reputation. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing .

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, as demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals; the submitted research statement; presentations at significant conferences; awards and accolades; other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline; and strong endorsements from referees.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (including the required materials outlined below), and strong letters of reference.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Candidates will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

In addition, the successful candidate will be assigned a teaching and service load.

The successful candidate will teach in the undergraduate Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) program on the Mississauga campus, with the ability to offer a broad range of courses from the introductory to the advanced level and will hold a graduate appointment at the on the St. George campus.

Through this appointment, the successful candidate will participate in the tri-campus Graduate Collaborative Program in Women and Gender Studies, with opportunities for graduate-level teaching, supervision, and mentorship. The sucessful candidate will also support undergraduate research and experiential learning initiatives, such as the WGSS Research Opportunity Program, the Department of Historical Studies Research Hub, and the Feminist Research Hub, and will engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, curriculum development, and program initiatives, including the WGSS Program's Feminist Lunch Series and other community-engaged scholarly activities aligned with the candidate's expertise.

HIRING SALARY RANGE

Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary range for the position of Associate Professor is $160,000 - $190,000 CAD per annum.

Exceptionally qualified candidates may be considered for compensation beyond the stated range.

The transdisciplinary Department of Historical Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga encompasses programs in Classical Civilization, Diaspora and Transnational Studies, History, History of Religions, and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies.

The Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program at UTM is an interdisciplinary program committed to feminist, intersectional, anti-colonial, and decolonial approaches to teaching and research. The Program fosters critical inquiry into gender, sexuality, race, migration, colonialism, and social justice while encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration across the Department of Historical Studies, in which it is housed. This appointment will strengthen existing expertise in feminist scholarship while expanding the Program's strengths in transnational and South Asian feminisms and fostering connections with the Department's Diaspora and Transnational Studies Program.
