Description

Your Role

The way in which home + auto insurance is distributed, fulfilled, and serviced is changing. More and more people choose to research, buy, and manage their insurance online. This I why we are looking for people like you to build a career with a progressive company that excels in the online space.

Square One was the first online home insurance provider in North America. With our guided online application process, we give our clients the ability to quote, buy, and bind an insurance policy online. We're the only ones in Canada that let clients choose what property they want to insure so they only pay for what they need. We're committed to making it convenient and easy for clients to do business with us. So, it should be no surprise that we're obsessed with delivering the absolute best online and offline experiences to our clients.

As a Product + Underwriting Specialist for Auto, you work directly with the company's leadership team to develop new product offerings and underwriting guidelines and implement regulatory changes. Your efforts contribute to the growth and profitability of the company's auto insurance portfolio. Your success in this role comes from superior analytical, communication and research skills. You use your creativity, inquisitiveness, and resourcefulness to identify opportunities and overcome challenges. You excel with time management, balance detail with priority, handling multiple projects and tasks with ease. This position will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product and underwriting management, marketing, claims, and operations, to ensure that our product offerings are competitive, compliant, and meet customer needs.

One of the things you enjoy most about Square One is the supportive team environment. You know you're never set up for failure; instead, you get all the coaching, mentoring, training, and tools you need for continued success.

Your Responsibilities

By working at Square One, you are directly involved in all product and underwriting initiatives. As such, you have many important responsibilities, including:

  • Developing and implementing internal underwriting strategies, product offerings, and responses to regulatory changes or compliance audits.
  • Creating and maintaining updated underwriting guides, rules, and resource libraries to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Reviewing and analyzing complex files to provide expert support for our claims and legal teams.
  • Interpreting and leveraging data insights to drive informed decision-making and strategic prioritization.
  • Conducting in-depth research on emerging markets, innovative products, and evolving risk landscapes.
  • Evaluating and approving complex underwriting files and high-level decisions as appropriate.
  • Building and executing remediation plans for system errors while managing documentation for regulatory reporting.
  • Monitoring market trends, industry shifts, and regulatory announcements to keep us ahead of the curve.
  • Tracking and reporting on product performance to ensure long-term growth and stability.

Your Qualifications

As a member of the Square One team, you have a desire to contribute to the overall success of the company. You do this by becoming an expert at what you do, directing your own work, and working with a team that has a broader purpose than just making profit. You and those who you work with would describe you as someone who:

  • Has excellent knowledge and understanding of auto insurance underwriting principles.
  • Has a good understanding of risk management and impact assessment in an insurance environment.
  • Possesses high-quality organizational, analytical, research and communication skills.
  • Possesses strong competitor product research and industry analysis skills.
  • Is skilled at managing and prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • Uses creativity and resourcefulness to identify opportunities and overcome challenges.
  • Has a natural curiosity and enjoys learning.
  • Is customer-focused and understands the importance of customer experience.
  • Has a good understanding of insurance profitability and performance metrics.
  • Provides and receives constructive feedback.

Your Experience + Education

Your experience and education helps ensure your success at Square One. For this role, you must have:

  • A degree or diploma in business, commerce, economics, insurance or marketing or equivalent work experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of continuous personal lines automobile insurance underwriting or product development experience with specific experience of ICBC Autoplan and optional coverage in BC.
  • Working knowledge of the insurance legislation and regulatory framework in the province of your experience.
  • Experience conducting wording analysis to identify coverage gaps and develop new wording in plain language.
  • Experience working on projects in a cross-functional fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in developing supplementary resources or training materials.
  • A high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, with the ability to learn new technologies.
  • A CAIB, CIP, or FCIP designation is preferred.
  • Fluency in English; French is a desirable asset.

Your Compensation + Benefits

You appreciate the fact that Square One personalizes your compensation and benefits in the same way it personalizes policies for its customers. Your very competitive compensation and benefits plan include:

  • Annual salary range: $61,000 - $82,000
  • 3 weeks of vacation to start and an additional week after 3 years.
  • Flexible medical, dental, vision and extended health care coverage
  • Long-term disability coverage
  • In-house and external training paid by Square One.
  • Full remote work option
  • A company profit share plan
