Senior Frontend Design Systems Technologist - Remote

Are you an experienced Front-end Developer with experience supporting the evolution, adoption, and governance for a shared design system? Do you have a strong front-end development expertise with a deep understanding of design systems, accessibility standards, and user-centred experience principles?

We're looking for a Senior Front-End Design Systems specialist for an initial contract until March 31st, 2028 that can be worked remotely!

Responsibilities
Design System Development
Design, build, maintain, and enhance reusable design system components, patterns, templates, and foundations.
Develop and maintain production-ready component libraries using React and TypeScript. Experience with VueJS may be required as design system support expands to additional platforms.
Create, manage, and evolve design tokens that serve as a shared source of truth between design and code.
Ensure alignment between Figma libraries, design tokens, and front-end implementations.
Contribute to front-end architecture decisions that support scalability, maintainability, and long-term sustainability of the system.
Identify opportunities to improve developer experience and streamline design-to-code workflows

Accessibility & Inclusive Design
Ensure design system components, documentation, and implementation guidance support WCAG 2.1/2.2 Level AA and applicable government accessibility standards.
Collaborate with accessibility specialists and delivery teams to identify, prioritize and address accessibility barriers.
Promote inclusive design practices that support diverse user needs, abilities, and service contexts.
Incorporate accessibility considerations into design system governance, testing, and release processes

Documentation & Adoption
Develop and maintain clear technical documentation, usage guidelines, contribution standards, and implementation examples.
Create self-service resources that enable teams to successfully adopt and implement design system assets with minimal support.
Provide consultation, coaching and implementation guidance to delivery teams.
Gather and incorporate feedback to users and interest holders to improve the design system and adoption experience.
Establish processes for collecting, prioritizing, and responding to feedback from interest holders.
Governance & Operations
Contribute to governance processes that support design system contributions, reviews, approvals, releases, and version management.
Support roadmap planning and prioritization of design system enhancements.
Define and monitor measures that assess design system adoption, effectiveness, and value.
Identify opportunities to improve consistency, efficiency, accessibility and user experience outcomes across products and services.
Support the development of sustainable operating models for ongoing management of the design system

Advisory Services & Collaboration
Collaborate effectively with designers, developers, product owners, accessibility specialists, and leadership.
Provide strategic advice and recommendations related to design system practices, front-end technologies, accessibility and digital service delivery.
Advising on emerging trends, tools, technologies, and industry best practices related to design systems, component-driven development, design tokens, and design-to-code workflows.
Facilitate knowledge transfer activities and provide transition materials throughout the engagement and at its conclusion.

Qualifications
Experience supporting enterprise-scale or government design systems.
5+ years of experience developing modern web applications and front-end systems within the last 8 years.
3+ years of experience designing, building, or maintaining design systems, component libraries, or shared UX platforms within the last 5 years.
Demonstrated experience with TypeScript and React or VueJS.
Advanced knowledge of HTML, CSS, modern JavaScript, responsive design, and front-end architecture.
Demonstrated experience creating and managing design tokens, component libraries, and design-to-code workflows.
Experience working with Figma component libraries, variables, and design system practices.
Experience with Storybook or equivalent component documentation platforms.
Strong knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and deliver results in complex environments with multiple interested parties.
Excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
