The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School, which plays a critical role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With $76 million in research funding per year, including more than $31.5 million held at DLSPH, the School contributes to improving population health and health policy and health systems through discoveries and innovation in data science and AI, maternal, child and reproductive health, climate change [response], implementation and improvement sciences, preventable disease through vaccines and prevention through [and] wellness such as with diabetes, comparative health policy, sustainable and equitable health systems, global and Indigenous health, among many other areas.

Your opportunity:

As the Program Coordinator, you will be supporting the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Indigenous Health stream including practicum coordination, recruitment, retention, program adjustments, and student interactions. The goal of the Program Coordinator will be to foster and nurture partnerships and relationships with Indigenous organizations, Elders, Senators, Knowledge Keepers and Indigenous peoples to improve the MPH in Indigenous Health program for students.

Additionally, you will nurture these relationships with Indigenous organizations to secure practicum placement opportunities for MPH in Indigenous Health students to fulfill their degree requirements. You will continue to provide a culturally safe environment for faculty, staff and students as you assist with recruitment, admissions, program changes, and student interactions and requests. Your excellent attention to detail, project coordination and interpersonal skills coupled with your demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous worldviews and cultural safety will allow for you to assist with the continuation of the MPH in Indigenous Health and its future growth.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the first point of contact for program related inquiries - providing detailed information on program and/or course eligibility requirements, recruitment dates, requirements and application procedures
  • Assisting with program changes, updates, faculty preparation for courses, and paperwork related to the MPH in Indigenous Health
  • Organizing, summarizing andcirculating program and/or course evaluations as well as drafting internal and external communications; Writing reports on program activities
  • Determining logistical details required for the execution of admissions processes and for events and/or programming
  • Conduct recruitment activities online and in-person for prospective students and liaising with contacts to determine site specific placement requirements, including gathering information on student performance.
  • Maintaining information on digital platforms including course information on student information systems and Sharepoint
  • Fostering and maintaining positive relations with stakeholders to support student placement activities; scheduling and assigning students to external learning opportunities
  • Coordinating networking activities between students and employers and/or alumni, collecting feedback on programs or events

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, community development, indigenous studies or related disciplines, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working in an admissions/student enrolment environment with Indigenous peoples, partners, or organizations, including experience in student services and program administration.
  • Experience working and collaborating in cross-cultural settings, preferably with Elders, Senators, Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous leaders, communities, and/or organizations
  • Experience in records management including maintaining information in databases
  • Experience and proficiency with coordinating meetings, agendas and follow up items
  • Experience coordinating the logistics of events, workshops and/or seminars
  • Clear and demonstrated experience of culturally safe practices when working with Indigenous peoples
  • Superb communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills; Experience with writing documents for senior management and leaders, as well as writing for a general audience
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management and problem-solving skills with the ability to meet conflicting priorities and balance multiple projects; Strong commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to learn new skills and learn inputs from multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated experience working as an effective team member in high pressure situations
  • Strong planning and project coordination skills with excellent prioritization and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with strong initiative and judgment skills
  • Well-developed Indigenous community and knowledge relations and skills
  • Client-services oriented with demonstrated listening and critical thinking skills; Ability to maintain a broad perspective; ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with all levels
  • Ability to travel to and transport supplies for a 2 week offsite program at Hart House Farm on an annual basis
