Team Overview:

The Ontario Mid-Market Team is looking for a Commercial Account Director to join our growing team of professionals in Ottawa or the Greater Toronto Area. Reporting to the Regional Director MMB ONT Tech, you will contribute to the execution of EDC’s 2030 corporate plan by leading business development within the Defence and Security sub-sector. You will prospect, grow, maintain, and manage a portfolio of medium-sized clients and prospects, with a central focus on connecting Canadian companies to domestic and international Advanced Manufacturing and Defense Sector supply chains, strategic buyers, prime contractors, and ecosystem partners.

What you will be doing:

  • Identify and qualify high-potential Ontario direct and indirect exporters, primarily advanced manufacturing and technology companies operating in, or capable of serving, the Defence and Security and aerospace sub-sector.
  • Act as a supply-chain expert by understanding qualified Ontario companies to prime contractors, tier-one suppliers, strategic buyers, procurement opportunities, and trusted domestic and international partners.
  • Develop and maintain a strong connection to the ecosystem in Ontario and across industry, government, financial institutions, associations, innovation organizations, and other partners to help clients enter, integrate into, and scale within supply chains.
  • Assess export financing, risk management, or other needs and match solutions to these needs.
  • Manage an assigned portfolio of accounts, developing territory strategies and account plans.
  • Facilitate transactions and manage the progression of designated portfolio pipelines.
  • Execute projects, initiatives, and tasks related to market coverage mandates.
  • Develop market coverage strategies and account plans that align client capabilities with sector priorities, procurement programs, buyer requirements, and supply-chain gaps.
  • Serve as the knowledge base and problem solver for prospects/clients, handling negotiations and interactions positively and professionally.

Discipline summary:

  • Create business development opportunities in Ontario and abroad for mid-sized and large enterprises across the Defence and Security sub-sector, with particular emphasis on advanced manufacturing, aerospace, dual-use technologies, and related capabilities.
  • Plan and manage time effectively while locating, evaluating, and recruiting potential customers and qualified leads.
  • Gather and sharemarket intelligence—including procurement priorities, buyer requirements, supply-chain gaps, certification needs, and partner mapping—to generate opportunities and tailor solutions to client needs.
  • Promote and sell a suite of products, services, and solutions to current and new customers, closing new business development opportunities.

Build partnerships and facilitate introductions across ecosystems to complement EDC’s solutions and accelerate clients’ integration into domestic and global supply chains.

  • Maintain a high level of client satisfaction.
  • Build and maintain effective long-term relationships within a geographic and/or industry focus.

What we are looking for:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Commerce, or other relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of 7 years of business development experience and commercial credit lending experience in international business and/or financial services.
  • Experience in Syndications, Bilateral and M&A transactions.
  • Experience in financing and managing transactions up and down the capital stack.
  • Knowledge of best practices in strategic sales and/or account management.
  • An established network in the GTA region relevant to EDC’s mandate.
  • Demonstrated ability to build industry ecosystems, develop strategic partnerships, and connect companies with buyers, prime contractors, suppliers, and market opportunities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

What will make you stand out:

  • Bilingualism (English and French).
  • Business development experience in commercial banking.
  • Sales management experience in related industries.

Experience in the Defence and Security sector, including knowledge of defence procurement, supply-chain structures, prime contractor relationships, compliance requirements, or dual-use technologies.

  • Knowledge of bank credit and lending practices.
  • Knowledge of international business practices and international trade.
  • MBA, CITP (Certified International Trade Professional), or CBCA (Commercial Banking & Credit Analyst) designation.
  • Knowledge of private equity-backed company growth strategies and analysis.
