Job description

The successful candidate

will maintain professional standards and confidentiality practices as well as an ability to be flexible in environments of a growing and developing school.This position will start as a term position from August 31, 2026, to June 30, 2027. Review and extension of contract to a permanent, full-time position based on successful integration of our school's purpose based on the Snaw-naw-as vision, mission, and values document and will be reviewed at the end of the school year.*Nanoose First Nations extended benefits and pension plan are only applicable to Permanent employees, not those under fixed-term contract*Responsibilities and DutiesUtilize the BC curriculum and apply it to learning for intermediate gradesDeliver BC's PE curriculum and options, such as art and music, across all gradesPlan, prepare, and provide instruction according to the BC school curriculumUse of Indigenous ways of knowing and apply these teachings to BC curriculumDevelop age-appropriate lesson plans that scaffold for the diverse needs of studentsDeliver evidence-based literacy instruction in smalls group or individuallyMaintain attendance and encourage regular classroom presence of all studentsImplement Land Based educationPerform daily prep work ensuring a tidy classroom with enough materials, visual aids, displays, and school-based activities for the dayCreate on-going student assessment of and for learningCommunicate student progress with familiesCollaborate with colleagues for the benefits of the schoolMaintain confidential student and teacher filesManage parent communications and learning updates that include examples of students learningFlexibility of instructional approach to accommodate coverage with classroom teachers when neededDiverse Learning NeedsBuild on child's identified strengthsSupport learning by implementing independent education plans or learning profilesAbility to work positively and communicate with support staff and work together to create recommendations for student support such as Speech Language Therapy, OT, and/or Behaviour InterventionReport on child's changing needs and adjust learning plans when neededSupports students' use of educational technology and/or various assistive communication modalitiesSupport students in learning communication skills and social/emotional strategies with both teachers and peersSupport cultural and spiritual learning, including; singing, drumming, dance, language land, and medicines through diverse methodsUnderstand the child's diverse physical needs when playing and in transition timesImplement physical inclusion strategiesOther DutiesCreate routine and general flow of the classroom, including; classroom expectations, routines, and set-up/tear-down of the classroom before and after instructional timeSupervise all assigned outdoor time, including yard time at recessProvide assistance to students in the case of injury or illness; performs assigned duties during fire/earthquake/lockdown drills and other emergency situationsFollow current in school and provincial guidelines and policies. E.g. Physical Restraint and Seclusion GuidelinesOpen communications with all staff membersCarry out other assigned, comparable duties that are within the scope of knowledge and skills that are required for this job descriptionQualificationsBachelor of Education, requiredA focus on Elementary Education is preferredTeacher Regulation Branch CertificationMinimum 1 year experience in teachingExperience working with Indigenous communitiesStrength Based and Trauma-Informed Practices trainingAbility to work with a SMART board and other related technologiesProficiency in the use of Windows based computer applications, including; Excel, Word, and other standard applicationsKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of the Snaw-naw-as Community and/or other First Nations communities within BCExperience implementing and supporting the IEP goals and the classroom adaptations for the students' diverse learningAbility to positively engage students in classroom activities (even if modified)Knowledge of age/diverse learning, social and emotional strategiesKnowledge of inclusion principlesKnowledge of conflict resolution methodsAbility to use tact and diplomacy to obtain confidential and sensitive information from parents/guardians/other support staffActive listening and critical thinking skillsExcellent oral and written communication and comprehension skillsAbility to function independently and in a team environmentDemonstrated organizational and time management skillsAbility to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlinesGood knowledge of the vision and values of Nanoose First Nation and the Snaw-naw-as community overallAbility to maintain positive working relationships with staff, council, community members, and partnersExperience working in an Indigenous community and not-for-profit organizationsWorking ConditionsThe job duties and responsibilities of this position vary in complexity and often require interpretation. The busy work schedules associated with NFN and Snaw-naw-as School require this position to be flexible in terms of tasks, some of which are urgent or time-sensitive in nature. The scope of the teacher responsibilities is also diverse and mental stress may be a factor when dealing with student or employee related concerns.*Physically able to work with students at their level (squatting, sitting, kneeling, and being able to move between floor, chair, standing, etc. Sufficient vision and hearing to perform related job duties. Able to operate and lift equipment on an occasional basis).This position description outlines the key responsibilities for the role and is not meant to be exhaustive. It should be understood that the activities, responsibilities and obligations of this position may be modified from time to time, through discussion between the Manager and/or the Director of Operations and the incumbent, in order to effectively meet the requirements of Nanoose First Nation.HoursMonday to Friday8:00am to 4:00pm (school hours: 8:45am to 2:30pm)WageRate of Pay is dependent on TQS category and stepsPay: $60,832.00-$109,713.00 per yearBenefits:Casual dressOn-site parkingWork Location: In person, Snaw-naw-as School, Lantzville, BC
