Job description
Grade 8 Teacher — Humanities (English & Social Studies) Location: Abbotsford, BC · Start date: [August 2026] · Status: [Full-time] DPS is an independent English-language K–12 school serving approximately 1,000 students in Abbotsford, BC. While Punjabi language and Sikh studies form part of our educational program, instruction is delivered in English. We welcome applicants from all faiths and backgrounds who are committed to supporting an inclusive, respectful, and student-centered learning environment. The Opportunity Grade 8 is a pivot point. Students arrive at the edge of childhood and leave on the road to becoming young adults, and the homeroom teacher is the steady presence who guides them across it. This is a role for someone who understands that at this age, relationships are the curriculum - that a student who feels known and safe is a student who will learn. You will be the anchor teacher for a Grade 8 cohort, delivering the humanities heart of their program - English and Social Studies - and serving as the homeroom teacher who knows these students well, advocates for them, and helps set the tone for their entire secondary journey. It is a role of real influence at a formative moment. What You'll Do Teach BC curriculum English Language Arts 8 and Social Studies 8 as engaging, connected humanities learning. Serve as a Grade 8 homeroom teacher: building a positive classroom community, supporting students' social and emotional growth, and being a first point of contact for families. Deliver additional assignments typical of a Grade 8 timetable — e.g., an additional teaching block, advisory, or supervision. Use competency-based, proficiency-focused assessment aligned to BC standards, and communicate student progress clearly to students and parents. Support literacy development for a diverse learner population, including students for whom English is an additional language. Partner with the middle-school team and support staff to help every student succeed. Contribute to the wider life and values of the school community. What We're Looking For Required BC Teacher Regulation Branch certification, or eligibility to obtain it. Strong foundation in the BC ELA and Social Studies curricula and in proficiency-based assessment. A genuine warmth for early adolescent learners and the skill to build a calm, well-managed, relationship-centred classroom. Commitment to the mission, values, and community of Dasmesh Punjabi School. Strong assets Experience teaching at the middle-school level (Grades 6–9). Skill in supporting English language learners and literacy across the content areas. Familiarity with structured literacy and reading-comprehension strategies. A collaborative, team-oriented approach to planning and assessment. What We Offer Inclusive: In keeping with the principles of Sikhism, we welcome talented individuals from all religious, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Practicing Sikhism is not a requirement. Supportive: Our educators enjoy a reduced workload, with dedicated time for preparation and grading. Benefits: Competitive pay, paid vacation, medical benefits, RRSP, extracurricular club bonuses, and professional development opportunities. How to Apply Please submit a cover letter and résumé to careers@dasmeshschool.com with Position Title in the Subject Line Dasmesh Punjabi School welcomes applicants of all backgrounds. Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check (vulnerable sector). We thank all applicants; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
