Established in 1976 the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is a First Nation governed post-secondary institution. You can contribute to that success while building your career.Nature and ScopeThe Fire Inspector/Fire Department Assessment Specialist is accountable for supporting fire protection planning, assessment, and reporting for First Nations communities across Saskatchewan. The Fire Inspector will work with First Nations fire departments, Band representatives, Tribal Councils, and other community contacts to coordinate and complete fire department assessments, including firehalls, fire apparatus, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, training records, and related fire administration documentation. This position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate.General AccountabilityThe Fire Inspector / Fire Department Assessment Specialist works collaboratively with the Community Safety and Fire Protection Program Coordinator and is responsible for contacting First Nations communities, scheduling assessment visits, conducting fire department asset assessments, documenting findings, and preparing clear written reports that support community planning, training needs, funding applications, and fire protection improvements.The Fire Inspector will assess fire department readiness by reviewing the condition, maintenance, organization, and availability of fire protection assets. This includes fire apparatus, structural firefighting equipment, wildland firefighting equipment, medical response equipment, firehall infrastructure, training records, maintenance practices, and fire administration records. This role is intended to provide supportive, practical, and professional assessments to help communities identify strengths, gaps, and recommendations for improvement. The position includes the following broad range of accountabilities:Specific AccountabilitiesFire Department AssessmentsContact First Nations fire departments, Band offices, Tribal Councils, and community representatives to coordinate assessment visitsSchedule and complete fire department assessments in First Nations communities across SaskatchewanAssess firehalls, fire apparatus, firefighting equipment, PPE, SCBA, wildland equipment, medical response equipment, and general response readinessReview fire department records where available, including training records, maintenance logs, incident reporting practices, fire service agreements, and fire prevention activitiesIdentify strengths, deficiencies, safety concerns, equipment gaps, and priority needsTake photos and document observations to support assessment findingsComplete assessments using SIIT's approved fire department assessment template and rating systemReporting and DocumentationPrepare clear and professional fire department assessment reportsRecord deficiencies, corrective actions, recommendations, and overall readiness ratingsMaintain accurate records of community contacts, assessment dates, reports, photos, and follow-up itemsSubmit completed reports and documentation to the Program Coordinator within required timelinesSupport program reporting by tracking completed assessments, community needs, equipment gaps, and emerging trendsCommunity and Stakeholder RelationsBuild and maintain respectful working relationships with First Nations communities, fire chiefs, Band representatives, Tribal Councils, and fire protection partnersClearly explain the purpose of the assessment process and how reports can support training, planning, equipment requests, and funding applicationsRepresent SIIT professionally during community visits, meetings, assessments, and related eventsRefer questions about SIIT training, Learn Not to Burn, Red Cross programming, or other Community Safety and Fire Protection supports to the Program CoordinatorCoordination and AdministrationCoordinate travel, scheduling, materials, and assessment logistics with the Program CoordinatorPlan community visits in an organized and cost-effective mannerComplete required administrative documents related to travel, mileage, expenses, invoices, and assessment activityParticipate in internal meetings, planning discussions, and program updates as requiredRecommend improvements to assessment tools, templates, reporting processes, and service deliverySafety and Professional PracticeFollow SIIT policies, procedures, and safety requirements during all work activitiesConduct assessments safely and avoid operating fire apparatus or equipment unless proper permission, supervision, and safe conditions are in placeIdentify immediate safety concerns and communicate them appropriatelyMaintain confidentiality and discretion when handling community information, photographs, and internal recordsStay current with relevant fire service standards, fire inspection practices, equipment readiness expectations, and industry trendsRequired Qualifications and Experience: A current Fire Inspector certification with seal is required. Preference will be given to candidates holding NFPA 1031 or 1030 Fire Inspector I and/or II certification, or current equivalent certification, with IFSAC, Pro Board, or other recognized seal. Experience working with MS Office suite of programs is required. Knowledge of First Nations culture and organizations, and prior experience teaching First Nations Adults are considered assets. First Aid and CPR certification is considered an asset. An understanding of adult learning theories and principles is considered an asset. Must have a reliable vehicle and valid driver's license as travel is required.As this position is considered safety sensitive, the Fire Inspector will be subject to testing as per SIIT's Alcohol and Substances policy.Required Competencies: Flexible and Adaptable, Effective Communication, Relationship Building, Results Oriented, Knowledge and Expertise, Problem Solving, Initiative, Attention to Detail.
