Job description
Project Engineer (Protection & Control)

Location: Burnaby, BC (Hybrid)
Duration: 12-Month Contract (High likelihood of extension)

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Project Engineer (Protection & Control) to support one of British Columbia's largest utility providers. This is an exciting opportunity for a senior engineering professional to lead the design and delivery of complex protection and control (P&C) projects supporting critical electrical utility infrastructure.

Working within multidisciplinary engineering teams, you'll provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle while ensuring designs meet industry standards, regulatory requirements, and operational objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering design and delivery of medium to high complexity Protection & Control projects.
  • Develop innovative engineering solutions, technical designs, and project documentation.
  • Coordinate and lead multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout project execution.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, design packages, cost estimates, and project schedules.
  • Review and approve engineering deliverables while acting as the Professional of Record.
  • Provide technical leadership during construction, commissioning, testing, and project closeout.
  • Support project planning, risk management, stakeholder engagement, and progress reporting.
  • Review consultant and contractor engineering work to ensure compliance with project requirements and engineering standards.
  • Participate in the development of engineering standards, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Minimum 4 years leading or coordinating multidisciplinary engineering design teams.
  • Strong experience with Protection & Control systems, including:
    • Protection relays
    • Control and automation devices
    • RTUs
    • SCADA systems
    • Remedial Action Schemes (RAS)
    • Teleprotection systems
  • Strong understanding of NERC reliability requirements.
  • Solid electrical utility engineering background with knowledge of transmission systems and utility operations.
  • Good understanding of project management principles and project delivery.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, influencing, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Familiarity with CAD systems, engineering design software, and Microsoft Office applications.

Must Haves

  • P.Eng. registered with EGBC.
  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • 4+ years leading or coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong Protection & Control design experience.
  • Experience with protection relays, automation devices, RTUs, SCADA, RAS, and teleprotection systems.
  • Knowledge of NERC requirements.
  • Utility engineering experience with transmission systems.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with substation engineering.
  • Working knowledge of protection, control, and telecommunications systems.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid work arrangement
  • In-office schedule: Monday, Thursday, and Friday
  • High likelihood of contract extension for the right candidate.
