Job description

Interior Health is looking for an experienced Compliance Lead, Medication Systems to join our team on a full time, term basis that is expected to last until the 12th of November 2027.

This position offers a flexible work location from within the Interior Health region.

This role is pivotal in supporting the health and wellness of our employees and clients of Interior Health. This position is key in supporting staff and supervisors in meeting their obligations in handling controlled substances. Candidates require a passion for quality improvement and delivering action oriented results. Applicants will require to be process oriented, built trusting relationships, engage others and have strong leadership capabilities. Some travel as part of this position may be required.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $90,770 (min) to $113,462 (midpoint) to $130,481 (max) per annum, based on 1.0 FTE. Interior Health typically establishes salaries within the minimum and midpoint of the salary range based on qualifications, experience of the applicant, and an internal equity review of the salaries of other employees.

About The Job

In accordance with the established vision and values of the organization, the Compliance Lead, Medication Systems develops and maintains controlled substances and related medication management processes and procedures in accordance with applicable federal, provincial, and local regulations and professional Colleges. The Compliance Lead supports and/or conducts scheduled and/or random audits of medication systems including the purchasing, receipt, distribution, administration, and/or documentation of controlled substances. The Compliance Lead raises awareness of controlled substance diversion risks and provides education and recommendations for mitigating risks. The Compliance Lead analyzes data and trends to identify potential diversion of controlled substances and maintains all related documentation; in collaboration with Managers and Human Resources, conducts investigations where potential diversion is detected; develops, maintains, and evaluates a multi-disciplinary approach to detection and prevention of drug diversion and the medication use process; and provides recommendations and reports to leadership teams.

Typical Duties And Responsibilities

  • Consults with Managers, Practice Leaders, and medical staff to ensure that controlled substance policies and procedures are clearly understood and implemented at all facilities; helps identify gaps and recommends corrective action to ensure processes and procedures are effectively communicated and actioned.
  • Develops and monitors audit processes for the purchasing, receiving, distribution, storage, and/or administration of controlled substances including the medication use process and conducts routine, random, and/or scheduled audits in these areas to identify areas of concern.
  • Establishes a multidisciplinary diversion prevention committee
  • Reports results of audits to leadership teams and quality committees, as appropriate; performs trend analyses and maintains records of drug diversion prevention, detection, investigation, and related follow-up activities.
  • In collaboration with clinical leaders develops and establishes an action plan and timeframe for the resolution of deficiencies discovered from audits or investigations; provides recommendations to improve the medication use system, in particular, in relation to management of controlled substances.
  • Supports Managers and Human Resources staff in investigations of suspected diversion.
  • Provides ongoing practice support and education to health professionals regarding the prevention, detection, investigation, and mitigation of controlled substances diversion.
  • Performs assessments to determine the effectiveness of drug diversion prevention activities.
  • Remains current with laws, rules, regulations, standards, and best practices related to controlled substances and the medication use process and communicates relevant information on controlled substances, drug diversion, and the medication use process to quality committees and leadership teams.
  • Performs routine review and ongoing analysis of automated dispensing cabinet information related to controlled substances
  • Evaluates new technology or novel methods of preventing or detecting controlled substances diversion.
  • Provides routine and specific reports to leadership teams on compliance with procedures and policies.
  • In alignment with IH’s Occupational Health & Safety Program, employees shall adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures at all times and attend all required training. Employees are responsible to report any identified hazards, unsafe conditions or incidents to the manager or supervisor immediately.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
