This role is ideal for an experienced I&C engineering professional with extensive expertise in automation, control systems design, and complex industrial projects. If you have strong technical leadership skills, experience delivering large-scale engineering solutions, and a passion for renewable energy projects, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
In this position, you will provide senior technical leadership across instrumentation and controls design, automation systems, industrial networks, vendor integration, and project delivery for a major pumped-storage hydroelectric project. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams while supporting projects from early design through commissioning.
  • Salary: $140,000 - $180,000/year + Bonus
  • Location: Edmonton, AB
  • Schedule: Full-Time | Monday to Friday
  • Employment Type: Full-Time | Permanent
Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and technical review of instrumentation, controls, and automation systems for hydroelectric, utility, and heavy-industrial balance-of-plant applications.
  • Develop control-system architectures incorporating PLCs, remote I/O, HMIs, SCADA systems, industrial networks, historians, and vendor interfaces.
  • Produce, review, and authenticate engineering deliverables, including control schematics, wiring and loop diagrams, interconnection drawings, panel layouts, cable schedules, termination drawings, I/O lists, instrument indexes, datasheets, specifications, and construction packages.
  • Develop control narratives, functional descriptions, sequences of operation, alarm philosophies, permissives, interlocks, and shutdown logic.
  • Specify and integrate field instrumentation, control panels, PLC panels, remote I/O panels, junction boxes, and vendor-supplied equipment packages.
  • Review PLC, HMI, and SCADA requirements, including operator interface layouts, alarm management, trends, reporting, and system functionality.
  • Review vendor drawings and documentation for technical compliance, constructability, control philosophy, and successful plant integration.
  • Support proposals, estimates, schedules, design-basis documents, technical clarifications, and project execution plans.
  • Support procurement activities, RFIs, construction support, FAT/SAT, commissioning, field changes, deficiency resolution, and project closeout.
  • Manage assigned project scope, schedules, budgets, risks, technical issues, and deliverable quality.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, vendors, contractors, construction teams, and commissioning personnel.
  • Mentor engineers, designers, technologists, programmers, and drafting staff by providing technical direction, coaching, and feedback.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by strengthening engineering standards, templates, checklists, tools, and lessons learned.
Qualifications
  • Must be legally eligible to work and reside in Canada.
  • Professional Electrical Engineer or Professional Technologist designation registered in, or eligible for immediate registration with, APEGA.
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in instrumentation, controls, and automation engineering and design.
  • Strong experience delivering I&C solutions within utility, power generation, renewable energy, or heavy-industrial environments.
  • Proven ability to independently lead, review, and authenticate engineering work.
  • Strong knowledge of PLC, HMI, SCADA, remote I/O, industrial networks, communication protocols, control panels, and vendor-package integration.
  • Hands-on experience developing and reviewing detailed I&C documentation from front-end design through IFC packages and commissioning support.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, electrical safety practices, and industrial automation best practices.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate with clients, contractors, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong attention to detail with a safety-first mindset and commitment to quality engineering solutions.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel within North America as project requirements dictate.
  • Experience with hydroelectric, pumped-storage, power generation, balance-of-plant, or large-scale industrial process projects is highly valued.
  • Experience with industrial communications, network architecture, and control system troubleshooting is considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting construction, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and operational handover activities is preferred.
  • Proven experience mentoring technical professionals and leading teams through complex project delivery.
Why Apply
  • Play a key role in the delivery of a major renewable energy project supporting the transition to a lower-carbon energy future.
  • Lead complex engineering solutions and make a direct impact on critical infrastructure development.
  • Work alongside a collaborative team of engineers, designers, programmers, and project professionals.
  • Opportunity to mentor technical teams and contribute to engineering excellence.
  • Competitive salary of $140,000 - $180,000/year plus bonus.
  • Long-term career opportunity with a focus on innovation, technical leadership, and professional growth.
  • Weekly pay plus 4% vacation pay.
  • Optional benefits available after 600 hours worked.
