About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular part-time Bilingual Nurse Specialist - Cord Blood Collections to join our dynamic Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services team in ON-Ottawa-General Hospital.

The Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by operating several programs that support better outcomes for patients living with the many diseases and disorders that can be treated with stem cell transplants such as leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, and inherited immune and metabolic disorders.

Formula for success

  • You will play a pivotal role in giving families the opportunity to make a life-saving difference by guiding them through the cord blood donation journey, from consent and eligibility screening to collection, documentation, and donor support, while ensuring a seamless and positive experience.
  • You will assist to keep the cord blood collection program running smoothly by maintaining operational excellence, ensuring equipment and compliance standards are met, coordinating staffing needs, and building strong partnerships with hospital teams to maximize every donation opportunity.
  • You help shape a culture of excellence by developing, mentoring, and empowering team members to deliver their best work and make a meaningful impact on donor and patient experiences.
  • You are a key advocate for quality and safety, proactively identifying opportunities for improvement, supporting investigations and corrective actions, and helping ensure the highest standards are consistently maintained across all collection activities.
  • You will lead through collaboration and influence by building trusted relationships with donors, healthcare professionals, volunteers, and colleagues, promoting outstanding customer service, and inspiring a high-performing team committed to the success of the Cord Blood Bank.

Desired education and skills

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing of a recognized registered nursing program; and minimum of three to six years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered nurse in the province of employment is a requirement.
  • Bilingualism (French) is mandatory
  • Experience in Obstetrical Nursing and/or Labour and Delivery is preferred.
  • Venipuncture experience is mandatory.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in stem cell collections is an asset
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles, developed skills in design, instruction or facilitation is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, team building and ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team setting as non-hospital employee in a hospital setting

What you can expect

  • Shifts/hours - Shifts are scheduled between Monday to Friday, 7am to 3pm including statutory holidays that fall on weekdays. Occasional evenings. Bi-weekly hours: 37.5
  • Location - Ottawa General Hospital. Occasional travel required to Canadian Blood Services office in Ottawa.
  • Physical requirements - ability to lift weight up to 10 kg (22 lbs.)
