The Opportunity

In our newly created full time Accountant position you will play an important role in helping CAEH strengthen communities scale impact and accelerate progress toward ending homelessness in Canada.

Reporting to the Director of Finance the Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day accounting operations of the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH) a registered charity and social enterprise. The role maintains accurate and timely financial records across all of CAEHs revenue sourcesincluding fee-for-service contracts grants and donationssupports the full accounting cycle through to month- and year-end close and ensures compliance with applicable accounting standards (ASNPO) CRA charity requirements and indirect tax obligations (GST/HST QST and provincial sales taxes). The Accountant provides the reliable financial information support needed to steward resources responsibly and advance CAEHs mission to end homelessness in Canada.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys meaningful work strong collaboration and solving complex challenges in a fast-moving environment. What Youll Do

In This Role You Will:

  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable including coding approvals and timely payment and collection across all revenue sources (e.g. fee-for-service contracts grants events and donations).

  • Support the month-end and year-end close assist preparing working papers and schedules for management and external audit.

  • Track restricted and unrestricted funds grants and earned-revenue contracts using fund accounting principles.

  • Prepare and file indirect tax returns and remittances (GST/HST QST PST) and maintain supporting documentation across CAEHs revenue streams.

  • Prepare and process semi-monthly payroll including related remittances and reconciliations in coordination with the People & Operations team.

  • Assist with accurate timely financial reports and variance analyses to support budgeting forecasting and program and project decision-making.

  • Maintain and strengthen financial controls processes and documentation identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy.

  • Prepare and issue customer invoices and support fee-for-service contract administration including revenue recognition and tracking against signed agreements.

  • Maintain project and program-level cost tracking to support margin and profitability analysis across fee-for-service offerings in partnership with the Director of Finance.

  • Partner with the Business Development Lead Director of Philanthropy Community Impact Lead and/or Contract Analyst on contract terms invoicing schedules and revenue recognition to ensure accounting treatment matches signed agreements.

  • Respond to internal and external information requests including funder and CRA inquiries in a professional and timely manner.

  • Perform other related accounting duties as required.

Were Looking For Someone Who Has:

  • Minimum 35 years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience preferably within a not-for-profit charity or social enterprise environment.

  • Experience in the not-for-profit charitable or social enterprise sector; familiarity with fund accounting and ASNPO.

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or active enrolment in the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP).

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Strong organizational and project management capabilities

  • The ability to work independently in a remote environment

  • Sound judgment initiative and problem-solving skills

  • Comfort working in evolving fast-paced environments

  • A collaborative mindset and commitment to continuous learning

  • Bachelors degree or diploma in Accounting Finance Commerce or a related discipline.

Assets & Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in homelessness housing or community systems work

  • Experience in nonprofit public sector consulting or social enterprise environments

  • Experience applying equity anti-oppression decolonizing or systems change approaches

  • Bilingualism (English/French)

  • Lived expertise related to homelessness or housing precarity

Required Skills/ Knowledge

Strong knowledge of full-cycle accounting and generally accepted accounting principles including ASNPO and fund accounting.

  • Working knowledge of Canadian indirect taxes (GST/HST QST PST) and CRA requirements for registered charities.

  • Proficiency with accounting/ERP software (QuickBooks Zoho Expense and Payworks) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills (formulas pivot tables reconciliations).

  • High attention to detail and accuracy with strong organizational and time-management skills to meet recurring deadlines.

  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive financial information.

  • Clear written and verbal communication with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial colleagues in understandable terms.

  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively across the organization.

  • Alignment with CAEHs mission and values including a commitment to equity and to ending homelessness.
