Position: Graduation Coach for Black Students

Salary: Band 5: $ 77,391.00 - $ 92,291.00

Location: TBD (Halton Region)

Work Schedule: 35 hours/week, 12 months/year

Position Summary The Graduation Coach Program for Black Students is a targeted program initiative, supported by the Ministry of Education’s anti-racism strategy and in alignment with the HDSB’s strategic commitments in its Multi-Year Plan and The Way Forward, that will provide intensive supports to Black students and their families with the goal of seeing each student achieve credits, graduate, and successfully transition into their chosen post-secondary pathway. Under the direction of the Board and system principal of Human Rights, Equity and Inclusive Education, the Graduation Coach will provide targeted, culturally responsive supports and address service delivery gaps to facilitate the engagement, well-being, and academic achievement of students who identify as Black.

Key Responsibilities

Act as a mentor, advisor and advocate for Black students with their educators, other school staff and families;

Collaborate with the Core Team, other school staff, where applicable, families and community resources to develop meaningful solutions to support the engagement, well-being and academic achievement of Black students;

Identify and address barriers to engagement, learning and well-being;

Facilitate access and referrals to academic supports and community resources to provide integrated support for student achievement and well-being;

Track and monitor student achievement towards graduation;

Prepare reports on the progress of the program;

Provide targeted, culturally responsive supports

Support the engagement, well-being and academic achievement of Black students;

Engage Black students and their families by affirming their identity and culture through culturally responsive and relevant practices;

Coordinate and supervise summer programs (e.g., 100 Strong Mentor program);

Engage and participate in cross-board networks and communities of practice.

Qualifications and/or equivalent experience in the following areas would be assets

Post-secondary degree or diploma in Humanities or Social Sciences with two years of experience in a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the Board.

Comprehensive life experience deeply rooted in Black communities combined with a deep understanding of systemic barriers and challenges that Black students face in the education system and in the wider community

Understanding of the diversity and composition of Black communities;

Understanding of the intersections of race, gender, faith, socio-economic dynamics and sexual orientation.

Ability to identify systemic barriers such as anti-Black racism, Islamophobia and other forms of oppression and propose appropriate intervention points;

Awareness of local community resources and the ability to support students and their families in accessing and navigating these resources;

Broad understanding of and an inclusive approach to relationship building with diverse stakeholders in the community and in schools.

Demonstrated respect and understanding of the diversity and composition of Black communities

Deep understanding of youth culture and the principles of youth engagement

Skills & Abilities

Ability to identify systemic barriers such as anti-Black racism, Islamophobia and other forms of oppression and propose appropriate intervention points.

Awareness of local community resources and the ability to support students and their families in accessing and navigating these resources.

Experience in handling contentious issues with integrity, diplomacy, confidentiality and discretion;

Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a large caseload, prioritize and organize work effectively, and maintain detailed and accurate records

Demonstration of a strength-based approach

Experience mentoring or coaching students

Valid driver’s license required for travel and a reliable vehicle
